Discover Jesmond 1888 Steering Committee Lead
Contract Type:Fixed term contract from 1 March 2025 until 31 March 2028.
Fee:£38,400 for the duration of the project. Two days a week, based on a 37.5hr week, paid monthly in arrears, for three years.
Reporting to:Discover Jesmond 1888 Steering Group.
Location:Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne for meetings, site visits and events. Home-working encouraged but hot-desking available.
About Us:
We are a church-based organisation committed to preserving and promoting local heritage, culture, and community identity. We are delivering an ambitious project to create a permanent heritage trail between two historic church buildings, alongside a vibrant events programme aimed at community engagement. We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Line Manager to provide strategic leadership and ensure the successful delivery of this project.
Role Overview:
The Line Manager will be responsible for overseeing the Project Co-ordinator and ensuring the successful execution of the heritage trail and accompanying 18-month community events programme. You will provide high-level guidance, support, and oversight, working closely with stakeholders, funders, and the Steering Group to ensure that the project objectives are met on time and within budget. You will also be responsible for monitoring progress, facilitating problem-solving, and ensuring that the project aligns with the organisation’s long-term goals for heritage preservation, community engagement, and cultural sustainability.
Key Responsibilities:
* Strategic Leadership: Provide overall leadership for the project, ensuring that the heritage trail and events programme are delivered in line with the organisation’s strategic objectives, heritage preservation goals, and community engagement targets.
* Project Oversight & Support: Work closely with the Project Co-ordinator, offering guidance and support to ensure the successful delivery of the project. Act as a point of escalation for challenges or issues that arise during the implementation of the heritage trail or events programme.
* Stakeholder & Funder Engagement: Manage relationships with key stakeholders, including funders, local authorities, heritage organisations, and community groups. Ensure clear communication between all parties and represent the organisation’s interests at meetings and events.
* Performance Monitoring & Evaluation: Regularly review the progress of the project, monitoring timelines, budget adherence, and overall outcomes. Facilitate problem-solving when issues arise and work with the Project Co-ordinator to adjust plans or resources as necessary to achieve project goals.
* Budget & Resource Management: Oversee the financial aspects of the project, in collaboration with the Steering Group Treasurer, ensuring that it remains within the allocated budget. Provide input into financial decisions, ensure that key expenditures are approved, and ensure that all funding requirements are met.
* Risk Management: Identify potential risks to the project’s success and work with the Project Co-ordinator to mitigate these risks. Ensure that the project remains adaptable and resilient in the face of challenges or changes in external conditions.
* Reporting & Accountability: Ensure that the Project Co-ordinator delivers clear and accurate reports to funders, stakeholders, and the Steering Group. You will be responsible for ensuring that all project-related documentation is up-to-date and compliant with funding requirements.
* Capacity Building & Team Support: Support the Project Co-ordinator in fostering a collaborative and effective team environment. Provide mentorship and guidance to help the Project Co-ordinator develop professionally and deliver on project outcomes.
Skills & Experience:
* Proven experience in a leadership or line management role, preferably within heritage, culture, or community-focused projects.
* Knowledge of the faith groups represented in the project: the Church of England and the United Reformed Church.
* A deep understanding of Jesmond, its community and history, and the role played by industrialists, artists, musicians & faith communities in its evolution.
* A track record of working with the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
* Strong organisational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to oversee complex projects and guide teams toward success.
* Excellent stakeholder management skills, with the ability to engage and maintain relationships with funders, partners, and community groups.
* Financial management experience, particularly in overseeing project budgets and managing resources effectively.
* Confident IT skills, including proficiency using common office programs, such as spreadsheets, sending emails, data entry and conducting online research
* Demonstrated understanding of heritage conservation, community engagement, or cultural programming.
* Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with experience in delivering high-level reporting and presentations.
* Ability to inspire and support teams, fostering collaboration and problem-solving across multiple project streams.
* A passion for heritage, culture, and community engagement, with a commitment to preserving local history and fostering community pride.
