Job Description
The purpose of the Health, Safety and Environmental Officer is to prioritise the safety, health, and environmental well-being of staff and visitors at our Maidenhead site, by effectively managing and implementing SHE best practices to promote a productive, safe and sustainable work environment.
The SHE Officer will be responsible for advising on the day-to-day SHE requirements for the site. They will work closely with the Building Supervisor - Facilities to address safety and environmental issues within the site, with a primary focus on regulatory compliance, risk management, and promoting a culture of safety and environmental custodianship to support the smooth operation of site facilities.
* Develop, implement, and maintain safety, health, and environmental programs including overseeing and maintaining an effective operating SHE system in compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards.
* In conjunction with the Building Supervisor - Facilities, conduct regular safety inspections and audits of facilities, equipment, and work areas to identify hazards, assess risks, and implement corrective actions, ensuring all risk registers are updated accordingly.
* Partner with the Building Supervisor - Facilities to coordinate with external vendors, contractors, and regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with safety, health, and environmental regulations and permit requirements.
* Provide safety training and guidance to visitors and staff on safe work practices, emergency procedures, and hazardous material handling, including DSE assessments and new joiner inductions.
* Monitor Health and Safety legislation guidelines and provide updates on new legislation and potential impact.
* Investigate accidents, incidents, and near misses to determine root causes and develop preventive measures to mitigate future risks.
* Monitor environmental performance indicators and implement strategies to minimize the environmental impact of facility operations, such as energy conservation and waste reduction initiatives.
* Maintain accurate records and documentation of safety, health, and environmental activities, including incident reports, training records, and regulatory permits, compiling environmental and safety statistics.
* Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support company-wide initiatives related to safety, health, and environmental management and ensure compliance with wider De Beers Group health & safety standards, policies, and procedures.
Qualifications
* Degree Educated and/or relevant tertiary qualification (IEMA / IOSH / NEBOSH) is desirable.
* Proven track record of working with SHE management processes and requirements.
* Experience and knowledge of safety, health, and environmental regulations, including OSHA, EPA, and local codes and standards.
* Experience in facilities management, with an understanding of building systems, maintenance practices, and regulatory requirements.
* Experience conducting safety inspections, incident investigations, and environmental compliance audits.
* Experience in developing and delivering safety training programs to employees of all levels of seniority.
* Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a focus on identifying and mitigating risks to ensure a safe and healthy work environment.
* Excellent communication skills, with the ability to influence and engage with stakeholders at all levels.
* Proficient in collecting, analysing, and interpreting data related to safety, health, and environmental performance, including using data management systems, generating reports, and using KPIs to track progress and identify areas for improvement.
* Proficient in investigating workplace incidents, accidents, and near-misses to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
* Good knowledge of the ISO 14001 EMS and the practical issues associated with its maintenance.
* Good knowledge of ISO 18001 OHSMS regulation and legislation.
* High level of attention to detail and effective time management and organisational skills.
* International travel may be required.
* Excellent communicator with the ability to communicate at all levels across the business and externally - able to give clarity and set direction.
* Ability to prioritise and demonstrate flexibility by switching between routine and challenging tasks at short notice.
* Work collaboratively with colleagues to achieve shared goals.
* High level of self-motivation and confidence; able to engage with Group colleagues at all levels.
