Job Description:
The Particle Physics Community at Imperial invites applications for a Research Associate to contribute to the CMS experiment.
You will primarily work on the future upgrade of the CMS experiment, focusing on developing the upgraded Tracker backend and Level-1 Trigger systems. Your responsibilities include algorithm development, particularly leveraging machine learning techniques for tracking and vertex finding, involving simulations and integration of algorithms into electronics hardware and testing at CERN facilities.
This role involves collaboration with multidisciplinary teams in hardware, software, computing, and analysis, engaging with postgraduate students, research associates, and academics. You will work closely with the CMS UK and international community, producing independent research, publishing findings, and contributing to community administration.
Qualifications:
* PhD in experimental particle physics or equivalent professional experience
Essential criteria:
* Understanding of detector instrumentation and operations in particle physics
* Experience with data analysis, algorithms, and machine learning in particle physics
* Experience in systems testing and troubleshooting
* Proficiency in C++ and Python programming
* Ability to work independently and take initiative
* Creative problem-solving skills and strong analytical abilities
* Leadership experience or potential
* Effective communication skills across levels
* Experience working in international collaborations
Desirable additional skills:
* Hardware experience, especially test stands and electronics commissioning
* VHDL coding experience
* Familiarity with CI/CD and containerized software
