Overview
This role offers a 12 to 18-month training period for an enthusiastic and proactive individual keen to build a career within the railway. The training provides a comprehensive introduction to the planning processes essential for delivering an operational railway. Working closely with the Short Term Timetabling team, you will gain a thorough understanding of UK rail geography, timetabling systems, and train planning activities. The training will focus on developing your skills to timetable accurately and efficiently, with a strong emphasis on interpreting safety-critical documentation and understanding the needs of GBRf’s customers.
Throughout the training, you will become proficient in interpreting the Weekly Operating Notice, managing engineering blocks, and assessing different commodities and their specific characteristics. You will also assist in processing train plans to/from Network Rail to ensure the best possible timetable product for customers.

Responsibilities
* Gain an understanding of UK rail geography
* Be able to (ultimately) timetable with a high degree of accuracy and speed
* Understand and be fluent in the use of the timetabling systems
* Build and understand GBRf’s customers and how to deliver for them
* Be formally trained and able to interpret the Weekly Operating Notice and Engineering blocks
* Understand and be able to assess different commodities, the elements and characteristics that underpin them particularly with regards to restrictions
* Be able to accurately and correctly read and decipher safety-critical documentation such as RT3973’s and Summary of Compatibility Statements
* To assist in the processing of the train plans to/from Network Rail; to ensure that the best timetable product is delivered to our customers.
* Build up communications lines within your department and the wider business
* Support and work alongside colleagues and your manager to build on your skill set above
* Deliver as appropriate reports on various ‘learnt aspects’ within your training
Qualifications
Essential
* Competent in Microsoft Office suite and general IT skills
* 5 GCSEs A – C grade or equivalent
Desirable
* Experience of working within the rail industry
* Knowledge of national railway geography
* Knowledge of train planning systems including TRUST/TOPS/VoyagerPlan
* A general understanding of railway rules and operating methods
* Possesses a general understanding of railway rules, operating methods, and the freight sector, with a focus on further expanding expertise through training and development.
