PROFESSIONAL DUTIES OF A TEACHER (NORTHERN IRELAND) 1987
1. Exercise of general professional duties
1. A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require.
2. A teacher employed by a board on terms under which he is not assigned to any one school shall perform duties as directed by the board and principal.
2. Exercise of particular duties
1. A teacher shall perform particular duties as assigned by the principal or board.
3. Planning
1. Planning and preparing courses and lessons.
2. Teaching according to the educational needs of the pupils, including setting and marking work.
3. Assessing, recording, and reporting on the development, progress, and attainment of pupils.
4. General
1. Promoting the general progress and well-being of pupils.
2. Providing advice and guidance on educational and social matters.
3. Making records of and reports on the personal and social needs of pupils.
4. Communicating with parents.
5. Co-operating with approved external persons or bodies.
6. Participating in meetings.
5. Assessment/Reporting
1. Providing or contributing to assessments, reports, and references for pupils.
6. Staff Development/Professional Development
1. Participating in staff development and performance review.
2. Reviewing teaching methods and participating in further training.
3. Advising on preparation and development of courses and teaching materials.
7. Discipline/Health and Safety
1. Maintaining good order and discipline among pupils.
2. Participating in meetings related to curriculum and organization.
8. Public Examinations
1. Preparing pupils for public examinations and assessing them.
9. Review and Development of Management Activities/Administration
1. Contributing to the selection and professional development of teachers.
2. Participating in administrative tasks related to duties.
10. Number of days/Hours of work
1. A full-time teacher shall be available for work on 195 days, with specific teaching hours.
11. Staff cover
1. Supervising and teaching pupils whose teacher is unavailable under specified conditions.
