About us ELCH PICU is the lead centre PICU for South Thames and home base for the integrated paediatric emergency transport service-South Thames Retrieval Service (STRS). PICU is a mixed intake unit, admitting cardiac and general intensive care. Over 1200 children are admitted per annum through 30 physical beds. 10 beds are predominantly for level 2 care. Approximately 35% of admissions are cardiac or cardiac surgical admissions. 50% admissions are as emergencies through STRS. STRS takes over 1750 calls per annum and transfers about 950 children. The paediatric critical care airway service and Evelina ECMO service (respiratory and cardiac) are also based within the PICU.The unit is accredited to undertake both Year 1 and Year 2 PICM training.
