The Medical Director Medical Education (MDME) provides leadership, strategic direction and vision for the assurance, management, and delivery of postgraduate and undergraduate medical education across UHDB. The post holder is responsible for the quality of the learning environment for all medical learners and is accountable directly to the Executive Chief Medical Officer.
A key focus will be to work in partnership with the University of Derby to support them in their application to develop a medical school, including the co-development of a clinical curriculum.
In addition, as a member of Executive Chief Medical Officer's Senior Medical Leadership Team, the post holder will provide advice and support across the whole of the Executive Chief Medical Officer's portfolio and, alongside the site-specific Medical Directors, deputise for the Executive Chief Medical Officer as required.

This is a 3-year fixed term post, with the possibility of extension for a further 3 years, subject to satisfactory appraisal.
Main duties of the job
The MDME is required to:
1. Provide strategic direction on the delivery of undergraduate medical, postgraduate medical and postgraduate dental education in the Trust.
2. Deliver strong and effective governance to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education within the Trust.
3. Maintain and develop the profile of medical education and promote high quality education throughout the organisation.
4. Develop and implement a strategy for the delivery of medical and dental education and training which supports the NHS Long Term Workforce.
5. Work in partnership with the University of Derby to support them in their application to develop a medical school, including the co-development of a clinical curriculum, capacity planning etc.
6. Provide oversight of the development of locally employed doctors and SAS doctors.
7. Lead the Trust's response to external feedback/surveys and educational quality visits.
8. Create and maintain a coherent, co-ordinated and inclusive medical education faculty.
9. Support the Executive Chief Medical Officer in maintaining high professional standards across the organisation and in developing and implementing a strategic direction for medical professionals in the Trust.

Job responsibilities
To champion continuous quality improvement in the provision of medical education and training within the Trust and provide leadership for the Medical Education clinical team.
Advise the Executive Chief Medical Officer on local, regional and national education and training initiatives and trends that impact on Doctors in Training / Locally Employed doctors and medical students on placement with the Trust.
Provide leadership to the Deputy Medical Directors for Postgraduate and Undergraduate Medical Education, across the portfolio of their responsibilities, ensuring plans are integrated within the overall strategy for Medical Education.
Oversee the provision of effective educational programmes which consistently deliver the curricula to medical students, postgraduate doctors and dentists in training.
Support the Foundation Programme Directors/ Royal College Tutors / Specialty Tutors in their responsibilities to assure the quality of training in the Trust.
Participate in the Senior Medical Leaders group, offering expertise from the perspective of medical education.
Deputise for the Executive Chief Medical Officer across the whole of their portfolio.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* GMC Registered with a Licence to Practice.
* Evidence of entry on GMC Specialist Register.
Experience
* Significant leadership experience at a very senior level.
* Minimum 5 years' experience as a GMC accredited Educational Supervisor.
* Minimum 5 years' experience within a medical education leadership role experience in both the delivery and management of postgraduate and undergraduate medical education.
* Evidence of experience at a strategic level within a national and/or international organisation.
Knowledge
* Understanding and appreciation of diversity.
* Key issues and complexity and pace of change facing the NHS nationally and locally.
* Expertise in medical education (may include qualification).
* Sound knowledge and understanding of GMC guidelines and advice.
Skills
* A high level of communication skills, to include but not exclusively, mediation, negotiation, consultation, facilitation, presentation, training and coaching skills using well developed interpersonal skills to influence, inform, reconcile differences and resolve conflicts.
* Evidence of solving complex problems, and be solution focused demonstrating a high level of persuasive and influencing skills.
* Analyse complex data and information, including preparing responses to complex reports and complaints, weighing clinical risks, and forming judgements often within tight timescales.
* Evidence of managing competing priorities and a heavy, demanding and complex workload.
* Coaching & values led leadership style, encouraging engagement and empowerment amongst staff and stakeholders.
