Job overview
The Ophthalmology Department cares for patients of all ages attending a wide range of ophthalmic clinics. We have Doctor/Nurse led clinics on all sites.
Within this post you will work in general Ophthalmology clinics and more specialised ophthalmic clinics, preoperative assessment and support the organisation and running clinics on a day to day basis, this provides the opportunity to cover all different aspects of Ophthalmic Care.
You will undergo in house training specialising in Ophthalmic Nursing care.
You will be expected to complete the ophthalmic competencies for the post that are required to work in the department.
Main duties of the job
Work in support of and under the direction of a registered
nurse, providing nursing care and assistance to patients
within defined parameters specified by the Registered Nurse
(RN).
Provide basic patient care and document that care in the
patient records.
Agreed clinical tasks, clerical duties and phlebotomy.
Be required to participate in working flexible hours to the needs of the service, including evenings and weekends.
Working for our organisation
We operatefrom three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, andUlverstonCommunity Health Centre.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies,daycase and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Person specification
Education and Qualifications
* Good General Education
* Basic literacy and Numeracy Skills
* Willingness to undertake NVQ level 3 in care related to area
Experience
* Manual Handling of patients
* Previous Experience in a care enviroment
* Awareness of the NHS structure and current issues
Skills
* Ability to communicate clearly and effectively (to understand and be understood).
* IT skills – basic level
* Good basic hygiene skills (e.g. food handling, hand washing etc).
* Some knowledge, interest or awareness of Ophthalmic care
