This includes heating, ventilation, and associated equipment, ensuring all statutory, planned, and reactive maintenance tasks are performed to the agreed Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Service Level Agreements (SLAs). Key Responsibilities 1. Technical Duties Respond promptly to job requests through the job notification system, ensuring tasks are completed safely, efficiently, and within SLA timelines. Provide routine and reactive maintenance for mechanical systems, including heating, ventilation, air conditioning, gas-fired plant, BMS controls, power supplies, lighting, and motors. Plan and perform remedial work, directing other trades when required, to ensure essential facilities remain operational. Manage the efficient operation of LPHW boiler plants, HVAC systems, and related mechanical equipment, including downtime scheduling and restoration. Troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve system issues, determining feasibility, required resources, and costs while coordinating with supervisors as needed. Investigate and address unidentified mechanical problems, providing expert recommendations or escalating to specialists as necessary. Participate in installation, refurbishment, and new project works, offering technical advice and implementing solutions. 2. Health and Safety Compliance Conduct risk assessments and adhere to safety protocols, ensuring tasks are performed in compliance with University and statutory safety standards. Actively contribute to hazard identification and risk mitigation within the department. Deliver and document statutory compliance tasks, ensuring accuracy and adherence to safety regulations. 3. Organisational Responsibilities Plan and prioritize workload based on urgency, impact, and access requirements, coordinating with security and other teams when necessary. Maintain accurate records, including electronic timesheets, service logs, and work documentation. Ensure tools and equipment are well-maintained and available for use. Accurately estimate and order materials needed for maintenance tasks. 4. Financial Oversight Provide cost estimates for minor works and contracted services in alignment with departmental guidelines. Coordinate small works projects, ensuring timely delivery within budget and compliance with University standards. 5. Communication and Customer Service Liaise with supervisors, contractors, colleagues, and other departments to minimize disruptions and ensure effective service delivery. Provide expert technical advice and ensure services meet high standards of quality and safety. Maintain professional communication with a diverse customer base, addressing concerns and providing updates. 6. General Duties Operate University vehicles to transport staff, tools, and materials across the campus. Ensure all work areas are clean and safe upon job completion. Perform additional duties as assigned, commensurate with the role. Person Specification Essential Qualifications and Experience Recognised apprenticeship or equivalent training in mechanical services, with significant industry experience, including commercial settings. NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Plumbing and Heating, HVAC/Ventilation, or Refrigeration. Certification in Water Regulations and Unvented Hot Water Systems (City & Guilds 3345 or equivalent). Strong knowledge of statutory compliance and proven ability to carry out a range of plumbing and mechanical fitting activities. Demonstrated experience in planned preventative maintenance systems and handling high volumes of reactive maintenance. Competent problem-solving skills, with the ability to work autonomously and escalate when necessary. Effective communication skills and ability to work collaboratively as part of a team. Desirable Qualifications Gas Safe Certification. Additional Requirements Full, clean UK or EU equivalent driving license. Reporting Structure The Mechanical Technician reports to the Zone/Mechanical Supervisor and is expected to work independently to deliver mechanical maintenance services, occasionally supervising contractors and providing guidance to junior team members
