Main duties of the job
The post holder will provide early input of specialist care to oncology patients presenting with oncological emergencies. This role will consist of working with emergency Acute Oncology Pathways and involve working with multiple disciplinary nursing medical, administration and operational teams.
The post holder will contribute to the delivery and evaluation of evidence-based patient care throughout the acute treatment pathway. They will have responsibilities for assessing the needs of the acutely unwell cancer patient, liaising with the oncology teams and the wider multidisciplinary teams across the Trust and KMCA to promote coordinated care.
The post holder will be expected to make clinical judgements on complex facts requiring interpretation and comparing options to ensure appropriate patient care and safety, thereby enabling faster, safer and better quality of care to patients with complications of Systemic Anticancer Treatment (SACT) or radiotherapy.

Job responsibilities
The post holder will provide direct, specialised care and advice to patients with cancer, using specialist nursing skills to assess each patient and ensuring that care and support to patients and families is sensitive to their needs for courtesy, dignity and privacy.
Demonstrate specialist oncology knowledge and skills in particular with reference to acute presentation of malignancy; complications of disease or progression and complications of treatment, developing palliative care knowledge and skills in order to provide advice on pain and symptom management and work collaboratively with specialist palliative care team.
Provides highly specialised advice to Oncology patients and other medical professionals concerning the care and treatment related to the specialism of Oncology.
To have a visible presence within the key points of entry across the Trust.
To ensure safe and high standards of care are maintained in accordance with hospital policies and procedures and National Cancer Standards.
Provide specialist AOS education and training programmes to other healthcare professionals.
Work collaboratively with other professionals to advise on the planning and organisation of patients needs, on-going care and discharge requirements, which require the formulation and adjustment of plans or strategies.

Experience
* Experience of delivering patient advocacy.
* Knowledge of palliative care - EOLC and Advanced Care Planning.
* Experience of delivering quality improvement both personally/professionally and as a facilitator.
* Extensive experience of working autonomously at an advanced level within the specialist oncology area delivering effective patient focused care.
* Proven evidence of management / leadership skills and autonomous practice.
* Previous experience of student supervision and clinical education at undergraduate level.
* Experience of acute medical/emergency department nursing.
Knowledge
* Ability to clinically lead and influence staff.
* Up to date knowledge of current clinical and professional issues within cancer/palliative and EOLC.
* Demonstrate an understanding of the National agenda for Cancer Services.
* Knowledge of current clinical and nursing research.
* Holds the AOS Competence Passport.
Qualifications
* Level 1 Registered Nurse on the NMC Register. To hold the appropriate level for the area of speciality.
* Demonstratable knowledge of working at Masters level.
* Post registration SACT Passport.
* Advanced Clinical Practice Skills or equivalent.
* Leadership Course.
* Non Medical Prescribing Course.
* MSc (or working towards) in relevant field.
Skills
* Proven listening / counselling skills with the ability to manage complex situations and appropriately deliver sensitive and difficult outcomes.
* Able to use skills of history taking and physical assessment to direct patient care.
* Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal and communication skills.
* Advanced clinical, managerial and leadership skills in specialty.
* Ability to conduct and evaluate own projects successfully.
