Make your mark as a Lead Protected Species Observer as Gardline!
The successful candidate will be expected to take the lead role in a wide variety of protected species and marine wildlife surveys, including marine mammal observations and passive acoustic monitoring, as well as providing general assistance to the project managers, lead scientists and report writers with the production of marine wildlife reports.
This work will predominantly take place in the waters of the United States of America (East Coast) therefore you will need to hold or be able to obtain approval to work in this location.
Your responsibilities as a Lead Protected Species Observer:
* Lead and undertake the production and quality control of PSO, MMO, PAMS and Seabird reports for submission to regulatory bodies under the guidance of the Marine Mammal Scientist.
* Advise on country specific legislation regarding protected species and marine mammal mitigation measures during seismic and other marine activities.
* Assist in the maintenance and upkeep of all protected Species and Marine Wildlife Departmental equipment.
* Expected to work at sea predominantly in US waters on projects away from the office up to 180 days per annum.
* Conduct Protected Species Observations (PSO), Marine Mammal Observation (MMO), Passive Acoustic Monitoring System (PAMS) services, Seabird and other Marine Environmental Survey duties within any specific contract.
* Responsible for collection, Quality Control (QC) and dispatch of PSO, MMO, PAMS and Seabird data and log sheets on completion of the field work.
Your qualities
You can move ahead as a Lead Protected Species Observer: if you have:
* Previous Lead PSO experience
* A good Understanding of Protected Species, Marine Mammals and seabirds; their biology and identification
* A good Understanding of Marine Mammal Acoustics
* A good command of written and spoken English
* You’re willing to travel (predominantly to the East Coast of USA) on a fairly regular basis
* You’re willing to work on location for up to six weeks at a time, followed by up to four weeks’ leave.

* Where you will work: Onboard our multi-role survey vessels, predominantly in the USA (East Coast) or world wide where Gardline vessels operate
* Full time job: The position of Protected Species Observer is a full-time role, based on 12 hour shift rotation whilst onboard
