The Assistant Practitioner supports Bone Marrow Transplant patients undergoing preliminary work-up investigations, BMT patients within the ambulatory care unit, and patients within the BMT ambulatory aftercare service. This requires advanced communication skills, clinical skills, and an excellent understanding of the transplant pathway. They will work as part of the multidisciplinary team in the BMT co-ordination team to provide a seamless service to patients referred to the service. Remote supervision will be provided by the registered nurses (RN) within the BMT Co-ordination team.
This role will also provide administrative support to a team containing medical coordinators, nurse specialists, and consultants treating patients with a wide range of conditions both malignant and non-malignant. The purpose of the role is to ensure that complex treatment is planned and all necessary arrangements are in place for the treatment to take place.
Main duties of the job
* To undertake work-up clinics for patients considering Bone Marrow Transplant, including:
o Phlebotomy and Venepuncture
o Heights and Weights
o ECGs
o PICC line care
o Blood Pressure measurements
* To assist with Transplant coordination, including:
o Liaison with Apheresis unit for stem cell collection
o Booking of accommodation
o Maintaining patients' records and Transplant database
o Dealing with incoming referrals and queries
o Managing BMT coordination inbox
o Supporting the clinical and nursing BMT team

Person specification
Knowledge and Experience
* Previous nursing or therapeutic care experience in an acute hospital environment
* Experience of working in a multi-professional team
* Trained and competent in Phlebotomy and Venepuncture
* Trained and competent in performing ECGs
Qualifications
* Maths and English at GCSE grade C or above (or equivalent) literacy & Numeracy Level 2
* Foundation Science Degree or equivalent qualification, e.g., Higher National Diploma, NVQ level
Skills and Abilities
* Good communication skills both written and verbal
* Able to plan, implement, and evaluate patient care
* Ability to work under own discretion and initiative to prioritise allocated workload effectively
* Flexible and adaptable to change, able to work a range of shifts and moving across wards/unit as the need arises
* IT skills, basic word processing, email, keyboard skills, data collection
* Able to complete appropriate documentation accurately
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build and maintain positive working relationships and inspire confidence
