Here at Serco, we are looking for an experienced leader and People Manager to join our fantastic team at HMP Thameside as Learning & Skills Manager. You will hold responsibility for the delivery of functional elements of the Contract, in line with Service Specifications and Prison Service Instructions. Working as part of the Education, Skills and Work Management team, you will report to the Head of Education, Skills, and Work.
You will be responsible for ensuring that your area of managerial responsibility functions efficiently and effectively, operating within the bounds of all local and national orders, rules, and regulations.
You will take pride and responsibility in promoting, developing, and coordinating all learning and skills activities (including education, vocational training, physical education, and library provision) to provide a comprehensive and coherent learning and skills programme for all prisoners.
You will also be expected to:
1. Manage the Prison Education Service (PES) and non-PES including industries, vocational training, and support purposeful activity.
2. Assist in the planning and implementation of quality assurance frameworks within the establishment.
3. Coordinate Self-Assessment Reports (SARs) for the establishment.
4. Work with other resettlement services, the risk management unit, and other functions to encourage offenders to continue their learning on release, ensuring that appropriate Offenders’ Pathways are arranged or notified prior to release.
5. Maintain a good working relationship with funding providers, including the Learning and Skills Council.
6. Take responsibility for preparing materials for internal and OFSTED audits.
7. Contribute to prisoner reports, including Assessment, Care in Custody and Teamwork (ACCT) reports and parole reports.
What you’ll need to do the role
This is a demanding role which requires outstanding leadership, the ability to motivate others, and manage complex processes and multiple projects within strict deadlines. It is essential that you have a positive attitude, relevant skills, and experience to excel in this role.
* Your passion for success and managerial experience should include a relevant Management Qualification for a Senior Manager, e.g., CMI Level 4 or equivalent, or significant managerial experience in a custodial setting.
* Experience and understanding of prison education are essential.
* Relevant Degree.
This role is ideal for someone with sound ethical and professional standards who is willing to support and drive their team to maximize achievements with limited resources through effective management and leadership.
