We have a great opportunity for a Biomedical Scientist to join our remarkable and dynamic Cellular Pathology Department, as part of a team which provides an efficient and effective Histology and Diagnostic (Non Gynae) Cytology service to two general hospitals (Southend University Hospital and Basildon University Hospitals) and local GP surgeries/community clinics.
We are now considering Associate Practitioners, with an accredited degree as an essential requirement. This adjustment opens the opportunity for candidates at both Band 4 and Band 5 level.

The post holder will provide professional leadership to Basic Grade, Trainee BMS, Associate Practitioners and Medical Laboratory Assistants in Cellular Pathology.
Main duties of the job
1. Undertake routine and specialised laboratory techniques in the processing of Diagnostic Cytology (Non Gynae).
2. Support laboratory staff with any queries for the non-Gynae sample and troubleshoot problems when needed regarding acceptance and processing of the sample.
3. Be ready and willing to cover any step in Non Gynae sample processing, staining, pre-screening and sending cases to the pathologists.
4. Work within health and safety guidelines.
5. Undertake the necessary Non Gynae courses, in addition to the in-house Non Gynae training, for the provision of the BMS Non Gynae pre-screening service.
6. Provide patients with the highest level of diagnosis process within agreed quality standards of service delivery and turnaround times under the supervision of senior grade BMS staff.

Job description
Job responsibilities
1. Rotate through all areas of the laboratory required (dependent on qualifications, experience and training) performing all designated duties in accordance with local working practices whilst maintaining high Professional standards and conforming to Health and Safety regulations.
2. Maintain the standards of conduct required by the HPC to practice as a registered Biomedical Scientist.
3. Provide specialist technical advice to clinicians as to the appropriateness of tests and timescales.
4. Perform routine and specialist biomedical investigations and participate daily in the scientific and technical activities of the laboratory section, which may include specimen reception functions, under the supervision of Senior Biomedical Scientists.
5. Participate in and assist with clinical trials, the development of new tests and research & validation of equipment ensuring at all times compliance with all policies as required by regulatory directives, accreditation bodies and local management policies and practices. Propose changes to standard operating procedures as required in order to develop and streamline the service or to reflect other changes.
6. Utilise the laboratory LIMS, Q-Pulse quality monitoring system and other application software according to authorised protocols including assisting in computer data entry in all areas of the laboratory.
7. Communicate efficiently, courteously and with clarity at all times, whether face to face, telephone or electronic methods referring enquiries to senior staff where appropriate. Matters being communicated may include complex information and/or results.
8. Attend and participate positively in laboratory and other meetings as directed by Laboratory managers.
9. As directed by senior laboratory staff, plan and prioritise work allocations, training plans, audits of both yourself and junior staff, responding appropriately to the needs of routine and urgent activities.
10. Provide supervision, training and professional leadership to junior staff which includes monitoring their performance against laboratory standards and their training plans.
11. Encourage active participation in continuous professional development and support the introduction of new technologies and/or systems by being a change advocate, and active mentor and tutor to junior staff.
12. Use consumables and equipment within your allocated section responsibility and be responsible for stock control audits and recording through approved channels as required.
13. Report all incidents and adverse events to senior staff and enter the information in the CAPA module of Q-pulse in a timely manner as directed by senior staff.
14. Demonstrate ongoing competency against training plans.
15. Complete all statutory, mandatory and essential training within timeframes specified.

Essential
* IBMS Accredited BSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent
* HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist (Band 5)
Desirable
* Working towards IBMS Specialist Diploma in Cellular Pathology (desired)
Experience
Essential
* Knowledge and experience of Histology/ Diagnostic (Non Gynae) Cytology processing, techniques, pre-screening (basic level or other) and practices at post honours degree level
* Understanding of Quality Control and Quality Assurance procedures in the department (e.g. staining IQC).
* Contribute towards overall upkeep of Diagnostic Cytology section by supporting staff, completing tasks in a timely manner, maintaining Turn Around Times and devoting time productively in other tasks of Diagnostic Cytology/histology department.
* Ability to work across 3 different sites in a 24-7 work environment if/and when required.
* Good knowledge and experience of industry standard laboratory information management systems and computer applications including Word, Excel, Power Point, Access and Statistical Packages.
