Join us, be part of more.
We’re so much more than an energy company. We’re a family of brands revolutionising how we power the planet. We're energisers. One team of 21,000 colleagues that's energising a greener, fairer future by creating an energy system that doesn’t rely on fossil fuels whilst living our powerful commitment to igniting positive change in our communities. Here, you can find more purpose, more passion, and more potential. That’s why working here is #MoreThanACareer. We do energy differently - we do it all. We make it, store it, move it, sell it, and mend it.
About your team:
At British Gas, our mission is to sell it and mend it.
We’ve been powering the UK’s homes and businesses for over 200 years – but supplying energy is just part of what we do. We’re making the UK greener and more energy efficient, getting closer to Net Zero. By using clever tech like thermostats, heat pumps, solar panels and EV chargers, we’re making it cheaper and easier for our customers to reduce their carbon-footprint.
Social Worker
Location: Homebased
Permanent - Full Time /Part Time – Monday – Friday generally 9-5
With our Flexible First working arrangements we empower our colleagues to work in a way that best suits them – meaning location doesn’t need to be a barrier. This role will allow you to work from home or use a Centrica office if you should wish.
We understand that full-time hours don’t suit everyone, which is why we’re also open to discussing flexible working arrangements. Whether you need to adjust your hours to fit your lifestyle or have specific needs that require a tailored schedule, we’re here to accommodate. Let’s work together to find a solution that works for you and benefits the team.
About your role:
An exciting new opportunity to join British Gas Energy as a Social Worker.
This is a truly exciting opportunity, as the role is brand new to our business. We’re looking for two passionate Social Workers to join our newly formed Vulnerable Customer Centre of Excellence — a team that will play a pivotal role in supporting some of the most at-risk individuals across the UK.
Working alongside the UK’s largest gas supplier, you’ll be joining at a crucial time, helping customers when they need us the most. This role offers a unique chance to make a meaningful difference to people’s lives, every single day.
As part of the Centre of Excellence, you will support the development and delivery of frameworks and strategies that help us better identify and assist vulnerable customers. You’ll be there to guide and empower our frontline teams — our “solvers” — to ensure that every customer receives the tailored support, compassion, and access to resources they need from British Gas Energy.
Your key daily duties will include:
1. Help identify vulnerable customers who may be struggling due to financial hardship, health issues, or other vulnerabilities and develop appropriate treatments/outcomes
2. Providing Support and Resources: offering direct support to solvers, e.g. helping customers access financial assistance programs, energy efficiency advice, and other resources to support the vulnerability
3. Assisting solvers and customers in crisis situations, e.g. health and wellbeing/mental health challenges, vulnerable customers facing disconnection or unable to afford their energy bills, by coordinating emergency support and interventions.
4. Educating and training solvers and customers about their rights, available support programs, and ways to reduce energy consumption to lower their bills
5. Working closely across the industry to develop and implement programs that support vulnerable customers, ensuring these programs are accessible and effective
6. Mental Health Support: Addressing mental health issues that may arise due to financial stress or energy insecurity, providing support and connecting customers with mental health service.
Here's what we’re looking for:
We’re looking for an experienced Social Worker who is compassionate, solutions-focused, and driven by a genuine desire to make a real difference in people’s lives.
You’ll bring a proven track record of delivering high-quality social work, demonstrating strong empathy, clarity, and calmness in both written and verbal communication. You’ll feel confident holding meaningful, often sensitive conversations, and identifying the right support and solutions for our customers.
Being digitally confident is key — you’ll need to navigate multiple internal systems with ease to ensure secure and accurate customer record-keeping.
We welcome applications from experienced Social Workers who live our values, bring a passion for outstanding customer service, and have the confidence to promote our broad range of products and services that help customers remain independent and safe in their homes.
If you're purpose-led and ready to join a team that truly cares, we’d love to hear from you. Experience within the energy industry or banking sector would be advantageous but is not essential.
