IN SHORT
MK College Group have an exciting new opportunity for a creative English Lecturer to join the team based at HMP Rochester, which is undergoing a period of expansion due to the recent merger with the adjacent prison, Cookham Wood. This acquisition has created this new role within our dynamic and innovative team.
As an English Lecturer, you will be actively engaging prison-based learners through the delivery of creative classes and engaging resources. You will be teaching a functional skills programme that is tailor-made to meet the needs of adult learners, allowing them to improve their communication skills in English, grow their confidence, and develop a love of reading. Many learners have diverse needs and learning abilities, often having had negative experiences with education. As a successful English Teacher, you will inspire them and provide a positive learning experience that can make a difference in their lives.
This role will involve working with learners from all backgrounds and in different settings, either classroom-based or in smaller groups across the prison. You will connect with learners in a professional manner, supporting them with their learning and enabling them to achieve success through qualifications and the development of confidence and softer skills applicable to employment.
We are seeking an individual who can communicate effectively with learners to inspire and motivate them. The average class consists of 10 learners, and sessions are approximately 3 hours long. Your lessons will need to be adaptable, innovative, and imaginative.
ABOUT HMP ROCHESTER
HMP Rochester is a Category C prison, holding approximately 950 adult male sentenced offenders across two sites. The main site is located on the site of the original “borstal,” with many original structures remaining, including the clock tower and gate lodge. The prison marked its 150-year anniversary this year, commemorating its rich history as a young offenders’ institute and later as an adult establishment.
HMP Rochester focuses on reducing reoffending by preparing offenders for release through accredited intervention programmes, skill and vocational training, and education in a pro-social environment. Courses offered include Maths, English, IT, catering, art, mentoring, construction skills, and more, with support for prisoners to gain qualifications and develop skills for a productive, crime-free life.
The education delivery hours are Monday to Thursday 8:45am – 11:30am, 1:45pm – 4:30pm, and Fridays 8:45am – 11:30am, with staff working on-site from 8:15am – 4:45pm each day and 8:15am – 1:15pm on Fridays. Class sizes typically range from 8-12 learners.
HMP Rochester is located a short distance from the M2 and M20, offering outstanding views and surrounded by beautiful Kent countryside. There is free on-site parking available for staff, along with facilities including gyms, fitness classes, a library, and fresh barista coffee.
