About the role
As an Engineer within our Marine Engineering team, you will have the opportunity to be involved in projects across the lifecycle of various types of vessels, particularly specialised, lightweight, and high-speed vessels for both our UK and international customers. You will be involved in solving engineering challenges through leading the development and delivery of the Marine Engineering aspects of our projects.
Your responsibilities will include:
1. System design and equipment selection development and integration using 2D and 3D modelling;
2. Surveys to support design changes and investigations;
3. Engineering investigations to resolve in-service defects and safety issues;
4. Project Management of engineering tasks and projects;
5. Engaging with the wider industry;
Your day-to-day work will include design of mechanical systems and arrangements with supporting calculations, supporting the review of production engineering 3D models, and liaising with suppliers, partners, and clients to develop design solutions.
This role is based out of our Fareham office, with a balance of in-office, remote, and hybrid working considered. Travel to other BMT offices and customer sites may be necessary.
About you
Candidates will have an HNC/HND and/or a Degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline, such as Mechanical or Marine Engineering. You will ideally be professionally qualified (registered as a Chartered Engineer) or demonstrate you are on the path for registration.
The following skills are considered essential:
1. A minimum of three years relevant design experience in the marine commercial industry for vessels in the range 15 - 70m+.
2. An understanding of the integration of ship systems and equipment within ships or marine platforms;
3. Ability to produce mechanical ship system schematics (in AutoCAD) and technical specifications;
4. Proficiency in AutoCAD 2D, and ideally skills in 3D CAD software;
5. Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
The following skills are desirable:
1. Defence domain experience;
2. Ability to coach and mentor less experienced staff;
3. Experience of PLM software or document management processes.
