JOB TITLE: Engineering Development Manager
OBJECTIVES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting directly to the CEO, the Engineering Manager will assume total responsibility for all technical engineering activities within the company. An integral and key responsibility of this role is to ensure the continuous improvement of manufacturing techniques via design and process management to ensure a quality product is produced in a cost-effective manner.
MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Responsible for the guiding & management of a team of engineers within Northern Hydraulics Limited.
2. Establish technical direction across the organization with a sound and pragmatic approach to efficiently delivering the highest quality product.
3. Implement best practice procedures and roll through necessary instruction to engineering team leads and operatives.
4. Ensure projects, ECCs, and NPDs are communicated to production in a timely and effective manner.
5. Develop and drive strategic engineering initiatives in conjunction with the senior management team in order to assist in the fulfillment of company objectives.
6. Work closely with the Production and Operations team to develop a total preventative maintenance strategy where possible.
7. Proactively drive continuous improvement techniques to improve product performance, compliance, efficiency, and potential portfolio of product application.
8. Identify Training & Development strategies.
9. Analyse existing practices & systems plus ways to develop them.
10. Plan and ensure the successful execution of engineering special projects in line with engineering strategy and objectives.
11. Promote and comply with legislative and business compliance standards including health & safety, environmental, and technical.
12. Preparation of design packs for production (using AutoCAD and 3D SolidWorks).
13. Specification of parts and confirmation of suppliers.
14. Driving cost reduction through design.
15. Ensuring the accurate preparation of quotations for customer inquiries.
16. Ensuring the accuracy of engineering drawings.
17. System maintenance of Design packs using AQP & ECO systems.
18. NPD & NPI Including sample design.
19. Promoting a culture of continuous improvement through management of continuous improvement and root cause analysis using 5Y/8D techniques.
20. Provide a high level of technical support for production and manufacturing team.
21. Ensuring the timely investigation of warranty issues and reaching resolutions.

6. Additional KPIs are reviewed on an annual basis and are to be communicated and agreed to between members of the senior management team and the managing director.
ROLE REQUIREMENTS
1. 3rd level mechanical / manufacturing or quality engineering qualification or QBE.
2. A minimum of five years’ experience working as an Engineering Manager in an engineering manufacturing environment.
3. Strong knowledge of special processes (e.g. welding, painting) including WPS.
4. Demonstrable experience in using value-added quality principles and facilitating improvement throughout the quality assurance process, by utilizing practical problem-solving techniques such as 5Y, 8D, cause and effect analysis, etc.
5. Working knowledge of QC tools.
6. Ability to demonstrate commercial astuteness with a strong focus particularly on managing the COQ and reducing the COPQ.
7. Previous experience working in line with ISO 9001 (2015) or a strong understanding of the principles of ISO standards.
8. Experience in driving the NC process with a demonstrated ability to use the NC process, root cause analysis, and quality SOPs to reduce the COPQ.
9. Understanding of Kaizen and lean manufacturing tools and techniques is an advantage.
10. Understanding of APQP.
11. Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.
12. Candidate must be initiative-taking with a proven track record of driving tasks to completion effectively and efficiently ensuring long-term continuous improvement is sustained.
13. Proven ability to work in a team as well as on their initiative.
14. Managing own time and supporting production effectively.
15. Ability to work under pressure using own initiative.
16. Strong-willed & resilient with the best interests of the quality function within NHL at the core of their intent.
17. Excellent people skills.
18. Excellent numeracy & literacy skills.
19. Proficient with the use of IT (particularly MS Office).
DESIRABLE CRITERIA
1. Knowledge of the hydraulic cylinder manufacturing process.
2. Experience within a precision engineering environment is advantageous.
3. Previous MRP/ERP experience is desirable.
4. ISO Internal Auditor Qualified.
5. Strong understanding of customer expectations.
