We are now looking for a new Principal Health and Safety and CDM Consultant to join our growing Engineering and Construction team.
About our Principal H&S and CDM Consultant role:
This role is at the heart of leading Health & Safety and CDM activities for our clients’ renewable energy projects, which span wind, solar PV, battery storage, and hydrogen technologies. You’ll be responsible for leading the Principal Designer function within Locogen’s team, working collaboratively with designers, contractors, and clients to ensure that risk is proactively identified, managed, and controlled in line with CDM 2015 and wider UK H&S legislation.
You’ll oversee design risk management from pre-construction through to final handover, helping develop and review key project documents (e.g., Construction Phase Plans, Pre-Construction Information, RAMS), conducting site inspections, and leading on any incident or accident investigations. You’ll also play an integral part in advising clients, sharing best practice, and supporting commercial activities like proposals and bid development. As Locogen continues to grow, you’ll have the chance to shape and mentor a small team, embedding a culture of safety and excellence throughout the project lifecycle.
Some of the things you may find yourself doing:
* Leading on H&S and CDM activities from pre-construction to operation, ensuring all project phases meet CDM 2015 requirements.
* Reviewing CDM documentation (e.g., Construction Phase Plans, RAMS) and collaborating with contractors to maintain high standards.
* Inspecting sites to verify compliance with approved plans and addressing any safety issues.
* Investigating accidents and incidents, determining root causes and implementing corrective actions.
Leading the Principal Designer function, including:
* Producing CDM strategy briefs that set the foundation for project-wide H&S.
* Planning and coordinating the pre-construction phase to ensure all design, technical, and organisational decisions align with prevention principles.
* Creating and managing Pre-Construction Information.
* Facilitating Design Risk Management workshops.
* Maintaining coordination and communication during construction.
* Preparing the Health & Safety file.
Engaging with clients and supporting business development by:
* Building strong relationships with key stakeholders and partners.
* Understanding client needs and aligning our services accordingly.
* Contributing to proposals that help meet our clients’ objectives.
* Representing Locogen at industry events to promote our expertise and thought leadership.
Essential Criteria
* 5+ years of experience in Design Risk Management or Construction Health & Safety roles.
* NEBOSH Certificate in construction safety or NVQ/vocational equivalent (minimum).
* Demonstrable practical application of CDM 2015 across all project phases.
* Eligibility for IMaPS (Incorporated Member of APS) or higher (10+ points using APS table).
* Solid background in renewable energy, oil & gas, energy, or infrastructure projects (i.e safety-critical environments).
* Strong working knowledge of UK H&S legislation (beyond CDM 2015).
* Client-facing and commercial acumen - Comfortable advising clients, contributing to business development, and presenting proposals.
* Incident investigation and reporting capability.
* Familiar with root-cause analysis and relevant regulations (e.g., RIDDOR.
* Willingness to travel for field-based inspections (few per month).
Desirable Criteria
* c10+ years’ experience in CDM/H&S.
* Chartered-Level IOSH (e.g., NEBOSH Diploma, NVQ Level 6) or Fellowship of IIRSM.
* BSc/MSc in a safety-related subject.
* APS Principal Designer course, or APS membership (IMaPS or above) with 22+ points.
* SMSTS (CITB) qualification.
* Experience in leadership or mentoring.
* Proficiency with CAD, GIS, or BIM.
* Familiarity with H&S management software or audit platforms.
