We have an exciting opportunity for a graduate trainee to join our Climate Change Team.
Do you have a passion for the environment and making a positive difference to tackling climate change now and for future generations? If so, we want to hear from you.
Our Team
The Climate Change team supports the delivery of the North Yorkshire Council Climate Change Strategy. This has 4 key themes:
1. Mitigation – reducing carbon emissions.
2. Adaptation – preparing for the changing climate.
3. Supporting nature to thrive.
4. North Yorkshire Council to achieve net zero emissions by 2030.
We do this by setting policy direction, working collaboratively with internal colleagues and external partners, and supporting residents, communities, and businesses to take climate-responsible actions. The team develops and delivers projects, reports on progress, and engages with communities throughout North Yorkshire.

You will undertake a range of project activities relating to research and partnership development, reporting back findings to a number of service areas. These activities may include sourcing and analysing data, producing project reports, researching information and services, attending events, and developing funding applications. You will also undertake, with supervision, projects of varying nature and complexity.
The successful applicant will work predominantly with the Climate Change team but will also have the potential to support the Net Zero Delivery, Natural Capital, and Environmental Policy service teams to learn about various areas including statutory Local Nature Recovery programmes and innovative programmes to attract private investment into natural capital, ecosystem services, and renewable energy.
The role will also have the opportunity to support responses to government consultations, emerging environmental policy, and high-profile areas that also have a high political interest.
You will also be part of our council’s graduate development programme, providing you with access to our graduate network, coaching, and leadership and development opportunities. The post will be based at County Hall Northallerton, but with flexibility to work from home and in locations across North Yorkshire, sometimes in the evenings and weekends.
