About the role
This is an exciting opportunity to join Balfour Beatty's team, selected as a construction partner for the Rolls Royce expansion work in Raynesway, Derby, designed to meet the growing demand from the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and in response to the AUKUS agreement. As part of this multi-phase programme, which will unfold over the next eight years, Balfour Beatty will deliver essential infrastructure enabling works, construct new manufacturing and office facilities, and redevelop existing industrial buildings on the site.
We are looking for an experienced and motivated Design Co-ordinator to join our dynamic team. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for managing and controlling the design process to ensure the timely and cost-effective delivery of specialist packages. You will play a key part in driving the design and procurement process, ensuring that all designs are fully aligned with project requirements, budget constraints, and quality standards.
If you are passionate about delivering cutting-edge design solutions, have experience in managing design teams, and want to be part of a company that fosters innovation, this is the perfect opportunity for you!
What you'll be doing
Key Responsibilities include:
* Design Proposal Management:
Lead the development of design proposals that meet customer requirements, ensuring they adhere to budget and timeline constraints. You will work directly with customers to present design proposals and gain approval while keeping customer goals at the forefront.
* Safety & Quality Assurance:
Ensure that designs prioritize safety in both construction and use, maintain high-quality standards, and deliver ease of maintenance. Your designs should also promote energy efficiency and minimize environmental impact, in line with sustainability goals.
* Team Leadership & Collaboration:
Manage the Design Team, including M&E elements, ensuring effective communication and clear briefing. You will also be responsible for managing third-party contractors or novated design teams, ensuring they meet all customer specifications and checking the competency and resources of design teams.
* Buildability & Risk Management:
Advise the design and construction teams on the buildability of proposed designs. Liaise with relevant statutory bodies, including town planning, building control, and utility services such as gas and water, ensuring all regulatory requirements are met.
* Project Deliverables & Schedule Management:
Take ownership of the design deliverables programme. This includes ensuring that there is a clear schedule for all design deliverables, leading regular gate reviews to confirm milestones are met, and communicating progress with the Bid Managers and Project Delivery teams.
* BIM Management:
Champion the implementation of BIM CSUK protocols, promoting teamwork and collaboration while managing and sharing data related to BIM models. Ensure the supply chain is fully aware of BIM requirements and apply best practices throughout the project lifecycle.
* Continuous Improvement & Lean Construction:
Identify opportunities for applying Lean construction techniques to save costs, reduce waste, and optimize the construction process. Share lessons learned and best practices from bids and projects to enhance future designs and processes.
* Risk and Value Management:
Contribute proactively to the Risk and Value Management process to ensure that all design solutions offer value to the customer and align with the overall project goals.

o A sound understanding of current design practices, particularly in relation to BIM (Building Information Modeling), Lean construction methods, and sustainable design principles.
o Experience with various procurement methods and their impact on design and construction processes.
* Communication & Interpersonal Skills:
o Strong communication skills with the ability to build and maintain relationships with clients, contractors, and project teams under tight timelines.
