We are looking for a Shift Engineer to join our team. The Role of the Shift Engineer is to effectively plan, manage and control all the engineering maintenance requirements across the entire Stocksbridge site on a shift basis in order to reduce breakdowns to minimum, maximise plant availability whilst maintaining the highest levels of health and safety. This will incorporate in some instances a hands on role with the shift teams.The Shift Engineer will have effective utilisation of both resident and contract engineering resources, providing supervision of their activities, provision of technical advice and resource to maintain the highest standard of maintenance work carried out on shifts.

The Role of a Shift Engineer
The Shift Engineer will have full responsibility for all engineering aspects of the plant operation in the absence of the engineering managers from the day team. On plant shutdowns the Shift Engineer will help and support the Day Section Engineers workload for both planned & work arising activities.
Provide a platform to ensure plant improvements, development schemes & Engineering Health and Safety standards are effectively rolled out. This may include the ownership of certain projects.
Provides first line management and effective supervision of the engineering shift teams.
To always ensure compliance of Liberty Speciality Steels SHE policies by conducting regular and routine audits of the engineering function and contractors.
Generate an effective handover of engineering activities using appropriate and agreed pass-on tools that will include the provision of a 24-hour engineering report.
Ensures key objectives set out by the Day Engineering Management team are effectively managed & driven on shift including performance management & training.
Determine and allocate the engineering resources and materials needed to satisfy the operational and engineering requirements of the plant. This must be achieved in line with the Company Asset Management Framework, utilising the relevant processes in order to optimise and improve the plants availability for production.
To ensure all major engineering breakdowns & delays are effectively handled by the Shift engineering teams.
To provide technical support and assistance including taking the lead when required to ensure problems are resolved safely and effectively.
To ensure adequate resource is available by deploying engineering personnel as required from other departments.
To escalate if problems cannot be resolved within agreed guidelines.
Ensure adequate Root Cause Investigations & correct Fault Analysis has been carried out on shift.
To investigate all potential or actual major engineering SHE incidents or breakdowns including plant damage that have seriously effected operations across Stocksbridge Site.
To ensure effective Root Cause Investigations are carried out to prevent re-occurrence of such incidents.
To ensure the shift team provides adequate and accurate reporting using INFOR feedback and any follow up work is effectively implemented as soon as possible.
Participate fully in all forms of communication across shift-to-shift & day engineering.
Ensures the objectives set by the Day engineering management team are achieved.
To ensure any actions resulting from Incident Investigations are adhered to.
Liaise with Shift Managers and Team Leaders across Stocksbridge site.
To control & effectively manage the shift teams holidays, absence and coverage within management guidelines.
Participate fully in all matters relating to Safety, Health and Environment
Ensures Liberty SHE standards & policy within the team are maintained at all times.
Be competent in the administration of Permits systems, SWPs and Risk Assessments.
Take a leading role in ensuring Incident Investigations are effectively carried out.
To ensure all PPE standards & safe operating procedures are maintained at all times.
Provide engineering assistance & resource to the Major Incident Controller for Stocksbridge.
To clearly implement and demonstrate the required approach to process safety, including the Management of Change.
Training & Development of the Engineering Shift Team
The Shift Engineer will actively participate fully in both their own and the shift engineering teams training and development that will ensure an effective engineering function on shifts.
Ensures the engineering team is on track with Training & Competency target levels of achievement set by the Department Engineers responsible.
To help identify and develop individual craft training plans for Shift engineering teams
To provide effective performance management of the Shift engineering team.
Manage and develop Engineers and Craft teams to satisfy current and long-term Business objectives. To ensure the team achieve their full working potential through ongoing updates, appraisals, 121s and PDPs, addressing any knowledge and skills gaps that may be in evidence
Performance managing any craftsman not contributing to the overall effectiveness of the team use Performance Management documents to support improvements.
The Shift Engineers are responsible for the activities of the shift engineering personnel across the Stocksbridge site over a 24-hour period. This will incorporate in some instances a hands on role with the Shift Team. The Shift Engineer will have overall responsibility for the organisation, supervision & deployment of the engineering team on a shift-by-shift basis.
The Shift Engineer will work with the various Department Shift Managers to determine engineering priorities to minimise unplanned downtime, ensure breakdowns are efficiently rectified and planned down time is fully utilised to implement PPM scheduled work.
The Requirements of the Shift Engineer
Essential Requirements of the Shift Engineer
Engineering qualification (HNC or higher depending on other experience) and at least 5 years experience in either a supervisory or technical role
They should have a good working knowledge of Health, Safety & Environmental legislation and the application in a Heavy Industry (ideally Steel).
Experience with a CMMS (INFOR current system)
Effective people manager with the necessary leadership skills to motivate a diverse workforce.
Able to communicate in clear concise manner, both in writing and orally, communicating honestly, clearly and directly, making effective use of communication technology.
A team worker, with a flexible approach to work.
They should have good analytical skills and the ability to assimilate, organise and analyse pertinent information for logic-based problem solving and root cause analysis.
Desirable Requirements of the Shift Engineer
A good appreciation of the steel process route, and how engineering parameters can affect the steel supply and quality.
They should have a sound knowledge of INFOR, stores and purchasing systems.

Computer literate with practical experience with Microsoft packages.
