Job Summary
We are looking for two skilled and enthusiastic Ophthalmic Imaging Technicians to join our dynamic imaging team. If you have experience in ophthalmic imaging, a keen eye for detail and are passionate about providing high quality patient care, we would love to hear from you.
As an Ophthalmic Imaging Technician, you will play a key role in capturing high-quality images of the eye to assist in the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of a variety of eye conditions. You will work primarily in our ophthalmic diagnostic clinics, undertaking vision checks and diagnostic imaging packages for patients from a range of ophthalmic specialties. Your expertise in ophthalmic imaging will contribute to enhancing patient care and supporting our medical professionals in providing the best possible care.
Main duties of the job
The main focus of this role is to provide ophthalmic diagnostic clinics for patients with a variety of ophthalmic conditions. These clinics aim to streamline the patient pathway, providing quicker, more efficient review for patients and this role is a key part of this transformation in service provision. Working independently, you will take a patient history, conduct vision and IOP testing and undertake the required imaging modalities as per protocol. You will be the key point of contact for patients, assisting them through the diagnostic care process, ensuring that they are informed and comfortable with their care plan and follow-up steps.
In addition, working alongside colleagues from Medical Illustration, including Medical Photographers and other Ophthalmic Imaging Technicians, and the wider eye clinic team, you will perform high-resolution imaging of the retina, cornea, anterior segment, and other parts of the eye using specialized ophthalmic imaging equipment for those patients who are attending for face-to-face review. This is a fast paced environment in which the team works flexibly and adaptably to provide comprehensive, high quality imaging services to a range of clinicians and specialties.

Job responsibilities
1. Work independently in ophthalmic diagnostic clinics.
2. Take a patient history, conduct vision and IOP testing and undertake the required imaging modalities as per protocol.
3. Be the key point of contact for patients, assisting them through the diagnostic care process, ensuring that they are informed and comfortable with their care plan and follow-up steps.
4. Perform high-resolution imaging of the retina, cornea, anterior segment, and other parts of the eye using specialized ophthalmic imaging equipment.
5. Work closely with the ophthalmology team to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
6. Maintain accurate and detailed patient records, including imaging data and relevant medical notes.
7. Work flexibly in a fast paced, patient facing environment.
8. Maintain and operate advanced photographic and imaging equipment.
9. Ensure the cleanliness and sterilization of equipment and work areas in compliance with safety standards.
10. Assist in the training of junior staff or trainees.
Person Specification
Requirements
Essential
* Manual dexterity and co-ordination required to operate camera equipment in clinical areas.
* Excellent attention to detail.
* Able to demonstrate an ability to assess patients and the ability to undertake investigations and tests.
* Data analysis ability to undertake basic interpretation of results in order to alert the clinician if any immediate concerns are noted.
* Ability to manage a workload independently and with minimal supervision.
* Able to fulfil Occupational Health requirements for the post (with reasonable adjustments if necessary), including clearance on blood borne viruses in compliance with Trust Policy.
Experience
Essential
* Sound knowledge of digital imaging and associated IT skills.
* Knowledge and experience undertaking wide range of ophthalmic tests used in the diagnosis of ocular disease.
* Ability to use Microsoft Office.
* Experience working in a busy outpatient department preferably within an acute setting.
* Excellent customer service skills and the ability to relate to and deal with a wide range of people including patients (some of which could be visually impaired), clinicians, nursing and administrative staff.
* A detailed understanding of the principles of data protection and confidentiality as applied to the clinical setting.
* Evidence of prior technical experience obtained in a similar role.
* The post-holder should have experience working in a busy outpatient department, preferably within an acute setting.
* Considerable technical experience within Ophthalmology or experience working as a technician in the public sector.
* The post holder will be expected to be patient focused, with excellent customer service skills and proven experience working with the general public including visually impaired patients.
* The post-holder should have the ability to work independently, often without direct supervision, managing their own workload and patient flow.
* Sound technical skills and computer literacy including familiarity working with software used to record ophthalmic results will be considered essential.
* An understanding of Leeds Teaching Hospitals strategy and vision and how Medical Illustration contributes to achieving these.
* A sound knowledge of all imaging techniques within ophthalmic imaging.
* Ensure that patient needs are central to the delivery of service.
Qualifications
Essential
* Qualified to at least ONC level (or equivalent experience).
* GCSE passes including English and Maths at Grade C or above (literacy and numeracy).
* IT skills.
* Understands the need to attend mandatory training as part of own personal development.
Desirable
* Current GCP training.
