Job overview
St James is a dynamic school, leading the way in the education of the whole person with a strong philosophically-based ethos, valuing stillness and meditation balanced with a strong academic focus. It also allows popular extra-curricular activities, such as Cadets and The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme to flourish.
We offer outstanding CPD provision as well as making available Mindfulness and Yoga sessions to all staff. Onsite facilities include free parking, free use of the gym and access to our daily refreshment provision including lunchtime meals.
To understand the nature of our school we encourage you to read our latest published report in The Good Schools Guide.
We are currently recruiting for a School Staff Instructor (SSI) to join our Combined Cadet Force (CCF) team. Working under the Contingent Commander, the SSI would have responsibility for the administration of the CCF and liaison with the MOD, CCF officers and staff in the effective provision of logistical support for a busy CCF programme.
In addition to the role of SSI, the successful candidate will take on the role of Sixth Form Study Supervisor and Educational Visits Co-Ordinator (EVC), both vital roles in the smooth functioning of the school and its extra-curricular activities, and roles that will fit comfortably with the SSI position within the school.
The successful applicant will be well organised and energetic with a passion for working with young people. Previous experience of military service and/or working with cadets is essential. An awareness of MOD and Cadet regulations, as well as a range of qualifications in military and adventurous training activities, is desirable; however, there will be ample opportunity for the successful candidate to add to their qualification portfolio through additional courses and training. A driving licence, including D1 (minibus) is essential.
The position requires a level of flexibility with regard to the working hours and days of work (due to the timings of CCF events), and it is expected that this will include some weekend activities and an after-school parade evening once a week.
Working hours: Full-time, Term Time Only, including Inset Days and Open Days with an additional 4 Weeks during School holidays (in SSI capacity).
If you wish to talk informally about the role before applying, please contact Capt. James Johnson, CCF Contingent Commander at j.johnson@stjamesboys.co.uk.
St James Schools does not accept curriculum vitae, so please submit your online application form by clicking Quick Apply.
Closing date: 8.00am on 3rd March 2025.

St James Senior Boys' School is a thriving educational establishment in Ashford, Surrey. The school occupies a magnificent Victorian/Gothic building set in 32 acres of grounds, giving us the physical space to continue to pursue our excellence in art, drama, music and sport. It also allows popular extra-curricular activities, such as Cadets, Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, sailing club, archery, fencing and kayaking, to flourish even more.
The school aims to give the children the very best examples in human endeavour and creativity, to provide good company and individual care, to maintain an ethos in which truth, honesty and virtue are valued, and to insist on fine conduct for the service of all. At the heart of this educational response is the belief that the emotional development of the child is crucial and to this end singing is core discipline.
