An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant post in Ophthalmology in Royal Cornwall Hospital NHS Trust.
The Trust is seeking to appoint a consultant in ophthalmology who will lead diabetic retinopathy service and work closely with the national diabetic retinopathy screening programme. The successful applicant will join a multi-disciplinary team of consultants who provide dedicated sub-speciality services in cornea, glaucoma, vitreo-retinal surgery, oculoplastics and orbital surgery, paediatric/strabismus, uveitis, and medical retina. The job plan will include weekly operating session and management of uveitis patients. The appointee will participate in 1 in 8 on-call rota.
Main duties of the job
The medical staff includes nine consultants (including this post), six specialty grade doctors, two associate specialists, a specialty trainee, two glaucoma/oculoplastic fellows and one vitreo-retinal fellow. The ophthalmic services are supported by a team of orthoptists, specialist nurses, ophthalmic technicians and optometrists.
The department is well equipped with four Cirrus OCTs, Heidelberg Spectralis OCT with HRA and Topcon Triton plus. Both Heidelberg and Topcon machines are capable of performing OCT angiography as well as fluorescein and ICG angiographies. The retinal unit has access to Argon Pascal laser and Aviso ultrasound machines. All clinics are run on Medisoft electronic patient record (EPR). All the ophthalmic images are networked through Ophthalsuite Blueworks and can be accessed from Medisoft throughout the county. The department has two operating theatres. One with a modern ceiling mounted microscope, Constellation and Infiniti machines for anterior and posterior segment surgery in Truro. The other with floor mounted microscope and Infiniti Phaco machine for day case surgery in Penzance, West Cornwall.
The ophthalmology department is located in a large dedicated facility on the hospital site in Truro. There is a strong commitment to provide services in the community close to patients. There are seven community centres and hospitals in Cornwall where the Trust provides ophthalmology outpatient facility.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* GMC Registration with a licence to practice.
* GMC Specialist Register or within six months of obtaining CCT (or equivalent) at time of interview.
* MBChB or equivalent
* FRCOphth or equivalent
Experience
* Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance
* Completion of training or fellowship in glaucoma and/or primary care
