An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated senior doctor in training (above ST4 or equivalent) with an interest in leadership, management and quality improvement to join the Department of Acute Medicine, Whipps Cross University Hospital, as a chief registrar.
The chief registrar role provides senior trainees with 40-50% protected time to develop skills and confidence in leadership, management and quality improvement. Learning that chief registrars gain from the Royal College of Physicians’ (RCP’s) bespoke development programme will be put into practice in a supported environment that provides autonomy, flexibility and support to develop and support projects that address key local challenges and priorities. This may include service improvement, engagement and morale, education and training, workforce, and sustainability

The chief registrar will be mentored by a senior clinical leader within the organisation and gain a unique insight into NHS leadership and management processes, as well as deeper knowledge of NHS structures and stakeholders.
The chief registrar will be expected to attend modules delivered as part of the RCP’s bespoke development programme, which will cover, for example, change management, team culture and development, quality improvement, leadership, influencing and personal resilience.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Applications are open to senior trainees:
· National Training Number (NTN) ST4 level or above
· Locally Employed Doctors (LED) at equivalent experience of ST4 or above
· Working full time or less-than-full-time
· Who have full GMC registration.
The clinical work provides an exciting opportunity to gain a breadth of clinical experience in Acute Medicine, rotating through the busy and varied acute assessment unit (AAU) and Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC). There is a unique opportunity to participate in developing new SDEC pathways to enhance the service.
This is a fixed-term role for minimum of 12 months. For those with an NTN, the role can be undertaken in programme or out of programme (training or experience) and must be discussed with your educational supervisor and training programme director (TPD), and permission to apply

Qualifications
Essential criteria
1. Evidence of satisfactory /more than satisfactory progress through training, including annual review of competence progression (ARCP) outcomes
2. Full registration with General Medical Council
3. Be fit to practice
4. Should be ST4 (or equivalent) or above
5. Should not hold CCT or be within 12 months of completion of training on intended start date
6. Approval of TPD to apply
Desirable criteria
7. Additional relevant degree (intercalated, masters or doctorate)
Experience, Knowledge & Skills
Essential criteria
8. Current advanced life support (ALS) provider as certified by the Resus Council UK
9. Competence in managing medical emergencies
10. Evidence of clinical competencies in their medical specialty appropriate for their stage in training
11. An appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
12. Ability to prioritise clinical need
13. Ability to maximise safety and minimise risk
14. Ability to work without supervision where appropriate
Desirable criteria
15. Competence with various procedural skills at ST4 level, such as intercostal drain insertion, abdominal paracentesis and lumbar puncture.
Research
Essential criteria
16. Understanding of research methodology and evidence based practice, including awareness of ethical issues

17. Evidence of relevant academic achievements, including publications / presentations
18. Evidence of involvement in a formal research project
