SENIOR PROJECT ENGINEER – PRE CONSTRUCTION - ENVIRONMENT
Bristol
A career opportunity has arisen in Bristol for a Senior Project Engineer with a Preconstruction focus to join the team at Galliford Try within our Environment Business. Working on high value Wessex Water projects, you will manage the interface between pre-con, design, commercial, matrix and delivery functions to ensure time, cost and quality targets are achieved or exceeded.
What you will be doing:
1. Manage the Detailed Design and Procurement phase to ensure we successfully achieve Client approval & GT Validation sign off’s, whilst maximising our opportunities for programme and procurement savings.
2. Ensure our Engineering service (internal or external) provides the right quality of design deliverables in line with our programme requirements through identifying what the important deliverables are, proactively expedite / check them for quality and setting stretch target dates for their delivery.
3. Provide / coordinate Operational / Matrix function input into the Pre-Contract phase of each project to ensure we have a robust Target cost, Risk register and outline Delivery plan.
4. Enhance and maximise the potential profitability of each project up to the substantial completion of detailed design and placement of all major subcontracts.
5. Undertake the role of Design Management Lead (DML) under our Business Management System (BMS).
6. Develop relationships, systems and processes to provide effective coordination across all designers, client, supply chain, procurement, planners and GT delivery to ensure cost efficient and effective delivery planning of Civil and MEICA elements of projects/programmes of work.
7. Plan, coordinate and implement any advanced site activities (e.g. surveys, trial holes, inspections, etc) required to support the design / delivery planning activities.
8. Implement a change control system that allows you and the SPM / PM to stay ahead of change, assess impact quickly and be decisive around moving forward.
9. Maximise our procurement opportunities (buying gains) through recognising time is key to allow our buyers to “sweat” the supply chain for maximum benefit.
10. Participate in Client Framework Supplier selection where required and challenge if they are constraining our opportunity.
11. Be the key interface coordinator with the supply chain ensuring they receive the right quality of enquiry and that their quotation returns are robustly assessed.
12. Get involved in the Pre-Contract award phase and work closely with the Pre-Con team providing / coordinating all necessary Operational input.
13. Understand and support Pre-con activities to ensure a seamless transition / handover from the Pre-Con team to the Operational team.
14. Operate rigorous change control procedures and deal effectively with technical queries.
15. Ensure a suitably developed project delivery plan and procurement schedules are produced along with reviews and consideration of any buildability and Temporary Works requirements.
16. Provide an effective Civil and MEICA technical interface with the Client.
17. Coordinate, challenge and optimise Civil and MEICA technical solutions, maintaining compliance with design and regulatory requirements.
18. Ensure all key functions are involved in the design process to confirm a robust final solution and effective delivery plan.
19. Ensure early involvement and engagement with the Commissioning & Asset Integration Manager and their teams during the design phase.
20. Report into the Risk Manager on all aspects of Civil and MEICA delivery including performance, forecasting and key issues.
21. Focus positively on the Client and Customer.
22. Understand and implement Quality, Safety and Environmental Policies and Targets.
23. Participate in creating a knowingly safe working environment.
24. Establish a reputation for Project delivery excellence, particularly in the Design and Procurement phases of the project.
25. Capture and share best practice and drive continuous improvement.
About You:
1. A minimum of an HND/HNC in a related Engineering discipline (BEng/MEng preferred).
2. Strong construction / engineering background, preferably in Water/Wastewater (or related) project delivery and design.
3. IOSH 1 day Working Safely or equivalent.
4. Can do, will do approach to Project delivery.
5. General management and leadership skills.
6. Excellent all-round verbal and written communication skills.
7. Client and Partnering focused.
8. Ability to Listen, motivate and manage others.
9. Good Commercial and Contractual awareness.
10. Ability to manage sub-contract and supply chain through project lifecycle.
11. Able to work within strict deadlines.
