Job Description: The Senior Mechanical Engineer for Innovation serves as a technical design expert on New Product Development efforts. This person evaluates, critiques, challenges, and encourages engineering innovation teams in their efforts to bring market-driven solutions to BW customers. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will participate in Project Market Requirement Events to understand customer requirements and travel to customer sites to understand those needs further. They will use Menlo methods to gather deep understanding of how equipment is used by the customer and bring that information back to MREs. They will take the output from the MREs and both design and help guide other innovation engineers in best implementation and understanding of 60-30-10 methods. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will participate in project planning events and daily scrums to help drive the strongest innovative solution or our customers. They will participate in projects in each Innovation location. They will work with the development engineers to assist assembly and testing of designs and machine systems when appropriate. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Design responsibility for individual components to complete integrated machine systems. Partner with customers and sales executives, other mechanical and electrical design engineers, manufacturing personnel and customer service technicians. Research and prepare specifications Develop and test prototypes at our innovation centre and at customer sites Process documentation Train and coach other engineers and technicians Project reporting, tracking, and organization Lead, facilitate, and manage continuous improvement initiatives Approve initial design work from Innovation Mechanical Engineers. Provide technical evaluation of engineers to the Innovation Leader during annual reviews. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS EDUCATION : B.S. Degree or similar in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Mechatronics Engineering, or a related field, from an accredited university or college. EXPERIENCE : Minimum 5 years of mechanical engineering experience with increasing levels of complexity and responsibility. Experience in materials, component selection, and general manufacturing processes. Experience with increasingly complex machine and/or system design using 3D CAD and analysis tools (SolidWorks or similar). KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS ABILITIES: High level of mechanical design skills using 3D CAD (SolidWorks or similar). Prioritization: able to prioritize customer needs to develop and maintain productive customer relationships. Excellent organizational and time management skills with strong attention to detail. Initiative: proactive, take prompt action to accomplish objectives and achieve goals beyond what is required. Knowledge and experience with engineering bills of material (BOM) structure organization and usage. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and able to learn new applications without difficulty. OTHER : Periodic travel required, less than 25%. Must have valid driver’s license and a good driving record. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE Master’s degree in related technical field. Experience in rapid new product development, Lean development, or Agile methods. Packaging machinery experience. Experience with power transmission, pneumatics, and complex mechanical mechanism design. Field experience in installation and/or troubleshooting. Project management experience. Passion to guide and mentor colleagues with less experience.
