We have an opportunity for a positive, forward-looking Assistant Manager at our Staverton farm shop.
The ideal candidate will have experience running a busy retail outlet, preferably food-related. The role includes responsibility for performance and profitability, customer service, goods ordering, shop and product presentation, and growing sales.
This is a busy shop, the assistant manager is very much part of the team. We are all about good food, so we are seeking an assistant manager who understands and demonstrates this, hand in hand with the ability to deliver consistently great customer service, be unflappable and inspire confidence under pressure. In the absence of the shop manager, you will lead the whole shop team, so the ability to motivate, get results, solve problems and handle whatever the day throws at you in a calm and professional manner is essential.
You will support the shop manager in continuing to develop the potential of the shop and cafe. Personality is as important as experience – the right person will be outgoing, friendly, enthusiastic, creating a welcoming and friendly experience for all customers. We are looking for someone with energy and ideas and the drive to see them through.
The shop & café are open 7 days p/wk and the role requires weekend working and a nominal 40hr week. Flexibility on working hours/days is essential as they will vary.

Day to day responsibilities:
* Maintain consistently high standards of customer service and a positive and enjoyable customer experience.
* Ensure products displayed are of the highest quality – in terms of flavour, appearance and freshness and maintain housekeeping standards throughout.
* Daily stock control and rotation of products, ensuring giveaway and waste are controlled and that orders are placed with suppliers on time.
* Ensure regular stock replenishment so that availability is maintained, stock is presented correctly, and the procedures are followed for receiving and checking deliveries.
* Ensure accurate pricing, till disciplines and stock taking procedures.
* Anticipate and foresee potential problems and head them off.
* Ensure the business operates in a legal & safe manner including H&S, food safety organic standards.
* Support the manager in all aspects of the role, embracing and contributing to positive changes.
* Ensure standards are maintained: staff personal appearance, behaviour, attendance, time-keeping, etc.
The Team:
* Help train and develop the team to be knowledgeable and able to confidently inform and advise customers about products and offers.
* We want our staff to thrive and be as productive as possible, so you will need to bring the best out in the team and work in a way that is in tune with the BFS ethos.
* Ensure effective and open two-way communication is in place within the team, using a combination of team meetings, newsletters, daily briefings, staff noticeboards etc as appropriate.
* Have an eye for talent and be able to develop and build the skills of the team, both to enable them to do their existing role to the best of their abilities, but also develop those that could progress further.
* Ensure the team feel part of the wider BFS business - keep the team up to date with operational issues and relevant news from around the business.
* Work with the shop manager to build a strong BFS culture throughout the business and ensure this culture is understood and felt by staff.
Customers:
* Show understanding of who Ben’s Farm Shop customers are, their expectations and why they buy from us.
