UGI Abdominal Wall & Hernia Fellow
Applications are invited for the post of UGI Abdominal Wall & Hernia Fellow in General Surgery. This post will be based at Epsom and St Helier Hospital and is designed to support the elective and emergency General Surgery Service. The post provides an opportunity for advanced training in the management of complex abdominal wall reconstruction and elective laparoscopic hernia surgery.
This is a 12 month post specifically for surgeons from the UK or internationally who have recently completed or are nearing the completion of their higher surgical training (post-CCT or equivalent) and wish to expand their surgical experience.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be expected to work with professional colleagues and local managers in the efficient running of the Service. He/she will be expected to participate in emergency general surgery on call, dependent on the candidate's level of experience and training needs. Emergency appendectomies are performed on children aged 7 and above. We do not carry out any other emergency general surgical operations in the paediatric population. Elective paediatric surgery is managed by our local tertiary unit, St George's Hospital.

St Helier Hospital is home to the South West Thames Renal and Transplantation Unit and Queen Mary's Hospital for Children, while Epsom Hospital is home to the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC). Both Epsom and St Helier hospitals have Accident and Emergency departments (A&E) and Maternity services (Obstetrics).
The Trust also plays an active role in the local healthcare economy. Surrey Downs Health and Care brings together our staff, CSH and the GP groups in Surrey Downs, and Surrey County Council in a partnership to improve care for local people.

* At least 2 years of Surgical Core Training or higher

* Experience in General Surgery at ST3+ level

* Good IT skills
* Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English to the appropriate standard necessary to fulfil the job requirements
* Ability to present at departmental meetings
* Knowledge of audit process
* An understanding of the principles of clinical research
Desirable criteria
* Participation in a previous audit project
* Previous participation in research projects and/or publications
