TECHNICAL MANAGER
Duties
The Technical Manager provides technical leadership and guidance on all aspects of Conveyor Design. They will be focused on supporting all aspects of the business, FEED studies, supporting front-end engineering at the tendering stage by creating and validating conveyor power and tension calculations and providing the specification and validation of conveyor/equipment post-award. Due to the technical nature of the business, the Technical Manager will be expected to liaise and support client-facing discussions at various phases within a project. The Technical Manager provides technical support to multiple stakeholders - internally and externally.
The Technical Manager supports the bidding team to ensure the best technical and cost-effective solution is offered at the proposal stage. After order placement, the Technical Manager is responsible for the conveyor calculations and design reports which form the basis of all subsequent design work. The Technical Manager also provides support during the commissioning and operation of the system if required. The role is often client-facing and deals with all areas of the business (Engineering and Project Teams, Purchasing and Site / Commissioning Teams) as required.

Role Responsibilities
1. Review bid documentation, contract, schedule, and client specifications
2. Interpret and clarify (where necessary) the customers' requirements
3. Support Proposals/Bids with scheme & conveyor design options, main component selection, supporting calculations and reports.
4. Develop optimum conveyor design solutions.
5. Produce Conveyor calculations and reports to feed into other departments (powers / tensions calculations, technical specification of major proprietary items such as winches and transmissions)
6. Produce Engineering Design packs to detail technical design concepts to clearly transfer information to the engineering and design team.
7. Promote Product Development and best practice.
8. Promote Cost Reduction and Value engineering.
9. Participate in internal design reviews meetings.
10. Participate in design development of existing and new products.
11. Produce purchasing specifications.
12. Provide Technical Assistance to all areas of the business as required
13. Provide Conveyor Design specific training and guidance to engineering staff.
14. Support and mentor technical engineers as required
15. Check and/or approve documents produced by technical engineers ensuring quality and consistency of the technical engineering output.
16. Liaise directly with Clients where required, always representing the business in a professional manner
17. Log and communicate any lessons learned on a project to the project and engineering team
18. Develop and maintain standard technical engineering document templates and checking procedures
19. Support and contribute to continuous improvement activity within the technical engineering team
Requirements
Essential
1. Bachelor Science / Engineering / Maths Degree or equivalent relevant discipline
2. Considerable experience in complex bulk handling systems. (This must include curved conveyors, boosters, brakes, regenerative drives, winch units, hydraulic equipment)
3. An ability to solve multi-faceted problems with velocity.
4. Sound decision maker, assertive
5. Three years in a Technical Engineering position.
6. Five years' experience in engineering design, OEM machine specification and application
7. Experience of Material handling equipment, conveyor design or process engineering
8. Experience and sound knowledge of British and International Standards relating to conveyor design and safety.
9. Experience completing a Design Risk Assessment
10. Knowledge of CE / UKCA requirements
11. Demonstratable experience of Value Engineering, working to cost targets for conveyor designs without compromising integrity.
12. Proficient with conveyor design software packages (Belt Analyst preferred)
13. Experience of using simulation software, FEA, material flow analysis etc and report writing
14. Proficient using AutoCAD 2D software
15. Experienced user of MS Office 365 suite
16. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with attention to detail
17. Technical writing skills
18. On site commissioning experience
19. Personal rigour and resilience
20. Highly organised and able to prioritise workload in a multidisciplinary environment.
21. Ability to set personal goals and objectives and drive Engineering excellence, supporting the line manager
22. Excellent presenting skills, capable of presenting to Director level / clients
23. Able to motivate, lead and encourage others - setting high professional standards.

26. Ability to travel for client meetings.
Desirable
1. Degree Qualified in a mechanical or relevant engineering discipline.
2. Professional registration and/or membership in committees and/or technical societies beneficial
3. Chartered Member of a professional institution
4. Knowledge of the full suite of Belt Analyst software (Including Dynamics)
5. Professional registration in engineering committees and/or technical societies
6. Autodesk product knowledge, most notably Inventor, FEA, and Vault software
Dimensions and Working Environment
The role impacts all areas of the business. The role requires strong technical leadership, clear and effective communication, and collaboration with stakeholders across the business. The Technical Manager should be focused on delivering best in class compliant design solutions, with a focused approach on cost, scope, quality, DFM and ease of installation.
The role requires cross-functional relationships with all departments as well as regular dialogue with the Senior Team. There will also be a requirement to support/and or lead client meetings to ensure that scope and technical content is understood and communicated effectively and efficiently.
Flexibility is essential due to the nature of the role, for example, supporting site and commissioning teams may be required outside of core hours.
