Consultant in Gastroenterology
This substantive permanent post will help meet nationally-set waiting time targets for scheduled and unscheduled care. It will be based in the Luminal Gastroenterology Unit of the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and involve both out-patient and in-patient activities. The weekly timetable separates in-patient and out-patient duties. The standard week will include 1-2 outpatient clinics and up to 3-4 endoscopy/procedure lists. Endoscopic sessions will include both upper and lower procedures and the applicant should be fully trained in both.
Every 8-week cycle will comprise: one week of in-patient duties including responsibility for acute gastroenterology patients in Ward 205 and elsewhere in the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and urgent endoscopies; and one week of referrals triage, during which elective activities will be reduced. The post-holder will contribute to the out-of-hours acute bleeding service. The post will not include liver disease (which is looked after on site by the separate but linked Hepatology team) and there is no General Internal Medicine commitment. There may be sessional commitments working at other sites in Lothian e.g. East Lothian Community Hospital (ELCH); or the Regional Endoscopy Unit at QMH, Dunfermline. The post will favour an interest in endoscopic resection (EMR/ESD) and third-space endoscopy e.g. POEM, therefore experience in this area is required.
