Elekta is looking for a Lead level industrial designer to join our global Design organisation and help us to direct the evolution of our industrial design strategy and portfolio. Elekta’s products enable the treatment of cancers with radiation therapy. Design at Elekta At Elekta, industrial design is about more than just hardware; it’s about how our software interactions are enabled through our hardware, and the ways in which hardware and software converge at key moments in our users’ daily work. As a member of our multidisciplinary global design team, consisting of 26 professionals from the UK, US, Finland, China, and the Netherlands, you will collaborate with experts in Industrial Design, UX Design, UX Research, and UX Development to create cohesive, user-centred experiences for our users and their patients. About the role and what you’ll do: Refining the industrial design of our products goes beyond aesthetics, it focuses on simplification and empowerment, enabling more users to treat more patients more easily. The Lead Industrial Designer will be responsible for leadership and hands-on development of high-quality, user-centred designs from concept to production. Reporting to the Industrial Design Manager, this role will collaborate closely with other design verticals, including UX Design and UX Research, as well as stakeholders in Marketing, Product Management, and Engineering. Assumes direct responsibility for hands-on design, modelling and evaluation of industrial designs for Elekta’s machines and user interfaces. Independently leads large, complex or high-profile industrial design challenges. Envisions, develops and refines high quality, user-centered product design solutions from concept through to implementation for tooling and production. Communicates concepts through preparation of hand sketches, digital (CAD) models and renderings to expert level, including complex surface modelling using SolidWorks and / or Rhino and Keyshot. Prioritizes the needs of the user throughout the design process. Translates insights from user research into design solutions that demonstrate strong focus on usability at the experiential (UX) and compliance level. Works cross functionally with Marketing, Product Management and Engineering teams to influence decision making and lead stakeholder teams towards agreement on designs. Works across functional boundaries within the Design organization. Guides UX design, UX research and human factors professionals to understand and develop new concepts for how hardware and software systems interact in key workflows. Collaborates on cross-functional UX research and usability evaluations to verify designs. Plans and leads ideation sessions and design reviews. Prepares aesthetic models and functional prototypes to support UX research and evaluate proposals. Defines design intent in production by preparation of detailed specifications for quality, geometry, colour, material, and finish. Defines functional intent for design of physical and hybrid physical / digital user interfaces by preparation of wireframes and specifications detailing UI interactions and workflows. Demonstrates experience gained from leading complex products from concept to manufacture: Works with mechanical, systems and electronics engineers to identify and efficiently address technical problems arising during design and production. Operates with knowledge gained through direct involvement of designing for efficient manufacturing and mechanical performance in a range of materials and manufacturing processes including high volume injection moulding. Instructs, coaches or delegates to more junior colleagues as required. What you'll bring: Batchelor’s degree in Product or Industrial Design (hardware) Knowledge base acquired from 5 years’ experience as designer (individual contributor) Experienced in user-centered design and development of products with complex requirements or interfaces. Expert thought-leader with confidence and credibility to influence senior stakeholders and direct cross-functional alignment on design. Experience developing designs and design systems for complex products; for example, leading user research studies, translating user needs into requirements, and working with other UX professionals to define operational logic for user interfaces based on stakeholder needs. Passion for developing solutions to complex problems. Skilled design storyteller, able to assimilate complex information in a digestible format tailored to technical and non-technical functions / audiences at all levels of the business. Experience defending and justifying design decisions based on business impact. Proficiency in use of 3D CAD systems (Rhino, SolidWorks or Solid Edge) to an advanced level. Experience guiding and mentoring design professionals across and within functions. Prior experience of working with needs and priorities of clinicians and other healthcare professionals useful but not essential. Familiarity with medical device design and its related regulatory frameworks useful but not essential.
