Job Description
Company Overview
Flux is pioneering a new class of AI accelerators called Optical Tensor Processing Units (OTPUs). We’ve already developed functioning prototypes and are now scaling our operations in London. Our work environment rewards innovation, speed, and bold thinking.
The role
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Materials Engineer to lead the design and optimisation of advanced semiconductor materials for our next- OTPUs. In this role, you will focus on material design for telecom wavelength applications, utiliding InP, GaAs, and other III-V semiconductor systems. You will design multilayer semiconductor structures, and oversee their fabrication with MBE/MOCVD — to develop the underlying architecture of our OTPUs and push them past conventional processing benchmarks.
Responsibilities
* Design and develop advanced semiconductor materials tailored for telecom wavelength applications, with a focus on InP and InGaAs systems.
* Lead MBE or MOCVD growth processes for III-V semiconductor structures, using techniques to achieve precise material control and high-quality deposition.
* Develop and refine multi-layer dielectric coating processes to enhance device performance and reliability.
* Conduct thorough material characterisation and performance analysis to drive continuous improvement in fabrication processes.
* Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including device and optical hardware engineers, to ensure seamless integration of material solutions within our overall system architecture.
* Stay up-to-date with industry advancements in semiconductor material science and deposition technologies, applying innovative approaches to solve complex material challenges.
Skills & Experience
* 7+ years of industry experience in materials engineering, with a strong focus on semiconductor material design for telecom wavelength applications.
* Proven expertise in working with InP and InGaAs material systems, as well as in III-V semiconductor growth.
* Proficiency in advanced deposition techniques such as MBE (Molecular Beam Epitaxy) and MOCVD (metal organic chemical vapour deposition).
* Experience with multi-layer dielectric coating processes and developing layered semiconductor structures exhibiting unique confinement properties.
* Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field; advanced degree is a plus.
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a demonstrated ability to optimise material processes for high-performance outcomes.
* Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
* A proven track record of innovation and continuous learning, with personal projects or contributions that advance semiconductor material design.
Details
* Competitive salary ranging from £100k+, depending on experience.
* Stock options in a rapidly growing AI company.
* Comprehensive healthcare insurance.
* 25 days PTO policy plus bank holidays.
* Based in our new 5,000 square foot office in the AI hub of Kings Cross, London.
* Bonus additional salary of £12,000 per year if you’re based within a 20-minute commute of the office.
* Private use of our 3D printer.
If you’re passionate about advanced semiconductor material design and eager to contribute to groundbreaking AI hardware, we’d love to hear from you. Apply now to join Flux and help shape the future of optical computing.
