Junior Clinical Fellow - 12 months fixed term contract
To work within a multidisciplinary team managing both screening and symptomatic breast cancers and benign breast disease.
To gain experience in managing benign and malignant breast disease working towards independence in new patient clinics and routine follow up clinics.
To assist with more specialised clinics, such as diagnostic results clinics, post-operative results clinics, reconstructive clinics, gynaecomastia clinics, family history clinics.
To gain surgical experience in core breast surgical techniques such as benign breast lump excision, simple mastectomy, sentinel node biopsy, and straight-forward breast conservation surgery.
To experience assisting with complex breast surgery including a full range of oncoplastic techniques including oncoplastic breast conserving surgery, implant-based breast reconstruction, use of acellular dermal matrices, pedicle-flap reconstruction, chest wall perforator flaps, free-flap breast reconstruction and lipomodelling.
• Work with the multidisciplinary team to provide a comprehensive oncoplastic breast surgery service for the patients of Bolton.
• Work with minimal supervision in new patient clinics and routine long-term follow-up clinics.
• Support the two FY1 doctors and nursing staff to run a safe and efficient pre-operative assessment clinic.
• Be involved in teaching junior staff and medical students.
• Provide assistance to the senior surgical team in theatre.
• Be keen to expand their core surgical skills.
• Complete administrative work to a high standard and in a timely fashion.
Bolton Breast Unit provides symptomatic breast services for the Bolton area and screening services for the areas of Bolton, Bury and Rochdale (eligible screening population approximately 100,000). 500 new breast cancers are treated each year. There are approximately 5000 new symptomatic referrals each year in one stop diagnostic clinics. The surgical team consists of 5 consultant oncoplastic breast surgeons, an associate specialist breast surgeon, a senior Oncoplastic fellow, two advanced nurse practitioners and a GP with extended role in breast disease management. The unit has an excellent reputation for training and has 1 specialist registrar, 1 core surgical trainee, and 2 foundation doctors.
Oncoplastic breast conservation surgery is offered to all suitable patients including a range of therapeutic mammoplasty techniques and chest wall perforator flaps. Immediate breast reconstruction is available for all appropriate patients, as per NICE guidance. Sub-pectoral and pre-pectoral implant-based reconstructions are offered. Theatres have an implant bank including polyurethane-coated implants and acellular dermal matrix, as well as the Puregraft lipomodelling system. There is a well-established pathway for the referral of patients for DIEP and TUG free flaps at the regional plastics unit at Manchester University Foundation Trust (MFT).
