The University of Essex in partnership with Horus Security offers an exciting opportunity to the successful candidate to revolutionise the pre-employment screening service the company provides to customers by leveraging AI and natural language processing, enabling the development of novel automated screening products for their clients.
This post is fixed term for 30 months and is based at Horus Security’s offices in Oxford.
DUTIES OF THE POST
The duties of the post will include:
1. Investigating new methodologies drawing from the fields of natural language processing, text analytics, web mining, game theory, statistics, machine learning, deep learning and artificial intelligence broadly defined.
2. Prototyping investigated methods using R or Python for rapid sandbox deployment.
3. Creating relevant ETL scripts to extract, transform and load data from multiple sources that can feed into and inform the algorithms for the AI product and its users.
4. Large-scale collection and curation of both structured and unstructured data from multiple sources using third-party APIs that might improve the AI algorithms.
5. Scaling successful prototype code using Spark and Scala to take advantage of distributed computing when this is necessary for speed of computation or size of data.
6. Creating thorough documentation including functional and technical specifications, well-documented code and extensive use of BitBucket for version control.
7. Working in sprints following an Agile / Scrum project management methodology.
8. Collaborating with software developers, data scientists, UX specialists and other business stakeholders working on the creation of the AI product.
9. Reviewing the current workflow in the company and specification of the functional requirements of the new system.
10. Supporting company scale up and exploitation of new technology.
11. Acting as project lead, to progress the project and ensure milestones are met to a timely manner.
12. Embedding technology, training and upskilling company staff.
13. Participating in academic and/or industrial conferences and other events, to disseminate and present research outcomes to the wider community.
KEY REQUIREMENTS
Qualifications:
1. BSc in Computer Science or related fields.
2. MSc in Data Science, AI, or a similar field, or equivalent industry experience.
3. PhD in Computer Science or related fields, or be near completion, or relevant industry experience.
Skills/Knowledge:
1. Good theoretical and applied knowledge in a range of statistical and computational techniques, particularly Natural Language Processing, classification methods and machine learning.
2. Knowledge and interest in data visualization.
3. Excellent understanding of data science techniques, especially with reference to statistics and machine learning.
4. Excellent knowledge of at least one query/SQL language (MySQL, PostgreSQL or Hive).
5. Excellent knowledge of at least one programming language (Java, Python, R, Scala).
6. Spark / Scala for doing machine learning at scale on a Hadoop cluster would be advantageous.
7. Use of machine learning to discover actionable patterns in data and develop hypotheses.
8. Awareness of the relatively new approaches to representing heterogeneous data using appropriate models.
Experience:
1. Experience working with large data sets – both structured and unstructured.
2. Experience working in sprints following an Agile / Scrum project management methodology would be advantageous.
3. Experience/knowledge of working with data from online social networks such as Twitter including obtaining data from Application Programming Interfaces (APIs).
4. Some previous experience of fusing disparate data streams using e.g. APIs.
5. Awareness of the relatively new approaches to representing heterogeneous data using appropriate models.
6. Experience/knowledge of supervised and unsupervised learning methods.
7. Experience of working within a team, preferably in a commercial environment.
