Job title: Principal/Lead Mechanical Engineer
Location: Rochester, Kent
Salary: Up to £65,000 dependent on skills and experience
What you'll be doing:
1. The main duty of this role is to provide expert Mechanical Engineering support for the design and development of new innovative designs through to fault finding, diagnostics and repair of existing products.
2. Using product knowledge and advanced engineering understanding, generate design concepts and solutions from first principles to meet project and customer requirements, supported by sketches, hand calculations and associated data packs.
3. Taking a Design Authority role in checking and approving datasets (drawings/MBD) to ensure they are correct to required standards, reflect design intent correctly, and adequately define parts for manufacture and inspection.
4. Take ownership of the design risk, and identify, define and manage work packages to de-risk areas of the product design early on in the lifecycle.
5. Be competent in the validation and verification of requirements using appropriate tools (e.g. DOORS) and managing these through the engineering life cycle.
6. Manage the work of senior and junior mechanical engineers and technicians, taking technical responsibility for the design solutions and technical data packs produced. Work collaboratively across all engineering disciplines, liaising with technical specialists as required.
7. Support the Team Leads, Projects, and Mechanical Functional Managers in preparing estimates for future design activities.
Your skills and experiences:
Essential:
1. Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline, or an equivalent combination of other qualifications and experience.
2. Meet the requirements of UK-SPEC at the Chartered Engineer Level.
3. Comprehensive experience of the full product design lifecycle, from concept through to production, within an engineering environment.
4. Experience in preparing technical datasets (drawings/MBD) and design review datasets.
5. Competence in the use of CAD tools to prepare design models.
Desirable:
1. Experience related to areas including avionic systems, optical displays, mechatronics, electronics packaging, anthropometrics, design with composites, additive layer manufacture and test and measurement equipment, will be of value in this role.
2. Experience in leading a mechanical, or cross-discipline, design team.
3. Proficiency in the CREO CAD system, and experience using TeamCenter, DOORs and JIRA.

The Senior Mechanical Engineering Team:
The Mechanical Engineering Design team operates in a number of roles across the business, primarily supporting the development of new products by providing design and analysis services to all of the products in development across site, including head worn and cockpit display systems, flight controls, and active inceptor programmes. In addition to this, they play a vital role in supporting our internal production and external customers in producing, using and maintaining the equipment in service.
