We have an exciting opportunity for a Band 7 Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to join the Regional Major Trauma Rehabilitation Service (MTRS). MTRS operates through a rehabilitation hub providing multi-disciplinary, coordinated, specialist acute trauma rehabilitation to in-patients and out-patient follow up.

Main Duties of the Job
The caseload requires skills in managing a broad range of acquired speech, language communication, and swallowing disorders across young and older adults. The post demands effective multidisciplinary team working and key-working patients on the Major Trauma Rehabilitation Unit. We are looking for someone with established post-basic dysphagia skills, experience with communication disorders in an acute setting, and who enjoys a varied caseload. The successful candidate will be a member of the supportive MTRS multidisciplinary team and a member of the Adult Speech & Language Therapy Team for ongoing clinical supervision. There are highly qualified specialists in both areas to provide support and encouragement for professional development. We are a research-active team.
Job Responsibilities
* To be the joint Lead SLT for The Trauma Rehabilitation Unit for Newcastle Hospitals Trust.
* To provide highly specialist SLT interventions as part of a multidisciplinary team for trauma.
* The Major Trauma Rehabilitation Service (MTRS) has a 10-bedded unit for regional patients requiring trauma rehabilitation at the Royal Victoria Infirmary.
* The MTRS will operate through a rehabilitation hub arrangement to provide multi-disciplinary, coordinated, specialist assessment, acute trauma rehabilitation, and community patient/family information and signposting based on the goals identified by the patient and their carers.
* The service will address comprehensive needs for functional and emotional support, information and advice, practical help with vocational issues, housing, benefits, and care support needs.
* MTRS will offer outreach advice, support, and review in some circumstances to local hospitals and community services across the patient pathway to optimize repatriation and hospital discharge.
* MTRS will contribute to appropriate interim reviews, i.e., weekly, 6-weekly, 6-monthly, and annual review processes for all patients known to the specialist rehab team.
* The service is required to cover 8 am to 8 pm Monday to Friday and 8 am to 4 pm at weekends. It is anticipated that occasionally patients and families will require access to SLT in the evenings and at weekends.
Please note it is a requirement of The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust that all successful candidates who require a DBS for the post they have been offered pay for their DBS certificate. The method of payment is a salary deduction from your first month's pay.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Recognised Speech and Language Therapy degree qualification or equivalent.
* Health Professions Council - Licence to Practice.
* Dysphagia training to intermediate level.
* Evidence of successful completion of specialist short courses - MSc equivalent.
* MSc in relevant advanced clinical practice.
Experience and Knowledge
* Substantial experience working with patients with acquired neurological disorders in an acute setting.
* Substantial experience working with trauma.
* Substantial experience working with the elderly.
* Multidisciplinary team experience.
* Experience in supervising more junior staff.
* Experience in teaching other professionals.
* Experience in supervising students.

Skills and Abilities
* Well established procedures for managing complex acquired communication disorders.
* Established skills in assessing the appropriateness of communication aids and ongoing development and implementation of high and low technical alternative communication devices.
* Excellent clinical supervision skills.
* Excellent teaching and presentation skills.
* Excellent auditory discrimination skills and ability to transcribe speech phonetically.
