Offer Description
Nuffield College intends to appoint a Postdoctoral Researcher to support the research programme and work of the Nuffield Humanitarian Forum (the Forum). Directed by Professor Andrew Thompson and Professor Sir Mike Aaronson, the Forum arises out of the 2018-2023 Nuffield College research project (“International NGOs and The Long Humanitarian Century”). The study of International NGOs (INGOs) has been a useful lens through which to view the wider global system for relief and development, and human rights; the Forum takes this approach further by exploring various themes, from a historical and contemporary perspective, such as geopolitical uncertainty, contested legitimacy, the future of institutional leadership, funding regimes, and the interplay between the UN system and other actors.
The Postdoctoral Researcher will conduct and publish independent and original research (as author or co-author) in areas relevant to the Forum’s overarching programme of research and play a leading role in the organisation of workshops and other events associated with the Forum. Responsibilities include:
1. Contributing to the design, background research, and drafting of reports, opinion pieces, and commissioned papers for the Forum.
2. Assisting with applications for external research funding and targeted surveys of NGO sector leadership.
3. Presenting research results at the Forum and other events, as well as at relevant seminars, workshops, and conferences.
4. Building effective working relationships with relevant individuals and institutions.
5. Identifying additional areas of research interest that align with the Forum’s research agenda.
Applicants should hold, or be close to completing, a PhD/DPhil in a relevant discipline such as history, political science, international relations, international development, or other relevant social sciences. They should possess research experience and expertise that fit with the Forum’s research agenda, demonstrate a strong interest in the translation of research into public policy, and engage with the logistics of organizing Forum events. Additional qualifications include:
1. Demonstrable archival research skills.
2. Experience of conducting independent fieldwork.
3. A good record of scholarly writing and publications.
4. Ability to translate complex research results for non-academic readers.
5. Aptitude for cross-disciplinary and collaborative working, including with non-academic partners.
6. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
7. Excellent organisational and interpersonal skills.
8. Familiarity with the archives of non-state actors and NGOs.
9. Experience of gathering oral history records, authoring successful funding bids, and collaborating with NGOs would be advantageous.
The post is full-time (35 hours per week); however, applications for part-time arrangements will also be considered. This is a fixed-term contract for three years. Candidates who have not yet completed their doctorate at the time of application should note that they may need to submit their doctoral dissertation for examination before taking up the post. There will be an initial probationary period of six months. The salary will be £40,528 per annum (pro rata for part-time hours). Benefits include free meals while on duty, a season-ticket loan scheme, and a contributory pension scheme.
