Description
Reporting to the Supervisor of Nursing or designee and under the direction of a registered nurse, the Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting physicians, nurse midwives, nurse practitioners, and nurses (thereafter referred to as providers) with evaluation, management, and treatment of patients during office visits and other tasks related to the visit consistent with his/her training and skills. His/her primary roles are to assure efficient patient flow through the office; to maintain neat, clean, and safe patient care areas; and to promote patient satisfaction by interacting with patients in a professional, friendly manner consistent with their needs.
The MA promotes patients' self-management and empowers patients/families to achieve maximum levels of wellness and independence. The MA will actively engage in care team huddles, clinical meetings, and quality improvement activities. The MA will seek opportunities to learn from others, be open to adapting best practices into their work, and effectively communicate those areas which they feel uncomfortable or need to improve upon to their supervisors. The MA will contribute to the orientation and development of new personnel as well as mentor peers and promote collaborative teamwork. The MA is committed to the constant pursuit of organizational excellence and improving the health status of the community. The MA must exemplify the core values and mission of the organization, always exercising utmost discretion, diplomacy, and tact in patient/staff interaction.
Primary Responsibilities:
1. Routine Patient Care
o Interview patients
o Collect data, information, and vital signs pertinent to visit (examples include blood pressure, height, vision, and pulse oximetry)
o Perform screenings pertinent to visit
o Assist with interpretation between providers, coworkers, and patients as needed
o Assist during medical examinations and minor procedures
o Perform/assist with finger sticks, EKGs, hearing and vision tests, etc.
o Secure patient information by completing and safeguarding medical records and keeping patient information confidential
o Perform diagnostic tests associated with patients' diagnosis (i.e., diabetes POCT filament)
2. Preparation
o Prepare exam room for correct procedure
3. Clinical Support
o Assist providers as necessary
o Obtain specimens as directed
o Perform Point of Care Testing according to protocol
o Assist during medical examinations and minor procedures
4. Maintain a safe patient care environment
o Follow all OSHA standards
o Follow all infection control policies and protocols
5. Supervise and Delegate within Scope of Practice
o Perform orientation and training of new staff and externs per the request of a nurse
o Create the daily assignments under the direction of the nursing staff
6. Administrative
o Maintain supplies and equipment; notify Nursing Supervisor or designee ahead of needs
o Complete forms for patients as requested
o Excellent time management skills and ability to multitask and prioritize work
o Complete all mandatory training and competencies in a timely manner
o Follow the process for fax and mail as directed by the Supervisor or designee
o Checkout patients and assist with scheduling patients for follow-up appointments
o Completing registries as assigned
o Huddling with assigned provider to scrub schedule
7. Other Duties and/or location as Assigned.
Qualifications:
High school diploma/GED and/or graduated from a Medical Assistant Program. Has knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.
Sound judgment and problem-solving ability.
Ability to prioritize
Ability to handle multiple tasks in a busy environment and see them through to completion.
Accuracy and attention to detail.
