Role
You will drive and deliver the protection & control elements of the cutting-edge project “REPOWER” – A multimillion pound world-first initiative unlocking the potential of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) like wind, hydro, biomass or batteries to contribute to the restoration of the network following a system restoration (Blackstart) event, with a view to get customers back online far quicker than using traditional methods. Furthermore, involves the implementation of advanced Distribution Restoration Zone (DRZ) automation, monitoring, and control that can build power islands, restore power to customers and ultimately resynchronise with the intact grid in a highly automated manner.
As a REPOWER Senior Protection Engineer you will be responsible for reviewing and delivering protection & control tests & commissioning for distribution networks (up to 33kV) projects, providing commissioning programmes, test specifications, specialist technical support, advice and input throughout the portfolio. In addition to supporting large capital programmes and responsible for managing day-to-day fault and defect tasks in a timeous manner.
This post encompasses a wide range of technical areas. The postholder will have a requirement to respond to a number of different challenges. The accountabilities are varied and a degree of knowledge is required in each area to ensure effectiveness.
What you’ll be doing
1. Deliver licence area / project business plan outputs in line with financial, regulatory and business plan objectives whilst optimising return through incentive mechanisms.
2. Influence and advise the Head of REPOWER on appropriate asset maintenance and replacement strategies through identification of failing assets.
3. Develop assigned trainees in accordance with business and project targets to enhance the wider business’ capabilities.
4. Proactively manage the control of costs with the remit of the role.
5. Requirement to participate on appropriate standby rota as part of wider protection and control team needs.
6. Through active customer and stakeholder engagement, support delivery of robust communication activities to facilitate the delivery of project plans and deliverables affecting local communities, customers and stakeholders.
7. Deliver robust project plans to facilitate business deliverables in line with district and licence plans which are devised to minimise outages to customers.
8. Ensure efficient and effective delivery of performance targets as appropriate, such as:
* Customer Minutes Lost, Customer Interruptions
* Broad Measure of Customer Satisfaction
* Guaranteed Standards
* Time to Connect
* Other Incentive mechanisms
1. To effectively deliver the relevant elements of the Project REPOWER/ business plan, undertake some or all of the following activities as required:
* contract management
* operational switching and safety document activities up to 33kV
* plant and protection commissioning
* project management
2. To drive continual performance improvement through analysis of outputs and feedback from internal and external sources.
3. Integrate asset stewardship and ownership values through sound engineering principles and coordinated planning and delivery activities to improve integrity, safety and longevity of the electrical network.
4. Promotes an exemplary safety culture and ensures that all safety legislation is implemented and delivered through all activities.
5. To develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours amongst the team through the mentoring and training of less experienced team members, graduates and trainees.
6. Where appropriate, deliver maintenance and reliability, system performance and network security business plan outputs in line with financial unit cost drivers, regulatory and business plan objectives whilst optimising return through appropriate system performance and customer service incentive mechanisms.
7. Deliver connections business plan outputs in line with financial, regulatory and business plan objectives whilst optimising profitability and return through incentive mechanisms.
8. Deliver a portfolio of capital investment projects and associated regulatory outputs, integrating the priorities and requirements of customer service, capital delivery, incentive mechanisms.
9. Lead the integration of Operational Excellence principles in all undertakings.
10. Ensure the accurate and timely capture and recording of data within Corporate systems.
11. Provide coaching, mentoring and guidance to assist with the professional and technical development of protection engineers and enhanced fitters within the section.
12. Ensure customer records are accurately maintained within Corporate systems and that all customer interactions are recorded.
13. Responsibility for the quality and financial assurance of projects delivered by the team.
What you’ll bring
1. Project / programme management experience, with a strong performance ethos and a track record of driving and delivering projects and initiatives.
2. Expert knowledge of the regulatory environment including relevant output and incentive mechanisms.
3. Broad operational experience preferred, e.g. spanning Distribution Operations, Protection, SCADA & Telecoms.
4. S1/OP-1 Authorised at 11kV & 33kV or working towards.
5. Sound knowledge of RTU/Telemetry/Control gateway systems and associated communications systems and protocols.
6. General contract, commercial and regulatory awareness with the ability to balance effective and efficient customer service and project delivery, ensuring maximum return on investment.
7. Track record of effective stakeholder and customer service engagement and management.
8. Ability to communicate and present information effectively at all levels.
9. Ability to manage competing priorities using sound engineering and financial judgement to determine optimal solutions.
10. Awareness and understanding of key business drivers and the external commercial context in which SPEN is operating.
11. Ability to devise solutions to complex problems/challenges.
12. Where appropriate, technical and operational experience in a relevant engineering role within a utility environment.
13. Protection and plant commissioning up to 33kV.
14. Where required, relevant operational authorisation.
15. Where required, expert knowledge of:
* Construction and maintenance standards in accordance with regulatory requirements.
* Engineering standards and specifications up to 33kV.
Minimum Requirements
* Engineering/Professional qualification or equivalent experience.
* SPEN Authorisations (or equivalent) – Protection/Substation Entry.
* Proven experience in the delivery of complex projects, including protection commissioning activities, as necessary.
* Relevant network construction and operational experience.
* Computer literacy.
