We are seeking an experienced transport planner to form part of a newly established transport planning team based in Manchester, working predominantly across the Northwest but also supporting projects across our northern region. The role requires experience on development related transport planning projects, which would include masterplan and site appraisals, junction modelling, transport assessments and travel planning work. This position would involve building relationships with internal and external clients to secure work, including working closely with the associate transport planner to develop the transport planning team.
About the role
The Manchester civil engineering team currently work collaboratively on challenging, high-profile projects with our architects, engineers and designers across our Northern region. Our projects include the provision of civil engineering designs associated with building developments and public realm projects, from the early masterplanning stage through to delivery of solutions on site, highway infrastructure projects and civil engineering masterplanning including flood risk. The Manchester transport planning team sits within the civil engineering team.
The successful candidate would have the opportunity to be part of the development and growth of the newly created transport planning team, working closely with our current civil engineering team.
BDP also has a strong urbanism team working across the UK on masterplanning and regeneration projects at the forefront of urban and public realm design practice. The successful candidate will work closely with our urbanism team providing knowledge of best practice in developing transport and movement strategies to help to deliver quality place making solutions.
Key experience and responsibilities
The role will include, but not be limited to, the following responsibilities:
* Undertaking and development of site access appraisals
* Undertaking of transport statements, transport assessments, design and access statements, transport input into environmental assessments and travel plans
* Development of concept designs for highways schemes for access and junction improvements
* Development and mentoring of junior team members
* Development of client relationships
* Producing fee proposals
* Assisting associates in seeking out and securing new opportunities
* Resourcing and financial monitoring and reporting
* Developing good relationships with professions across BDP
About you
* You will have proven experience working in a transport planning consultancy and be comfortable presenting ideas and project work to clients
* You will have relevant, and extensive post graduate experience and good knowledge of transport planning policy, principles and standards. Particularly those required for development planning, travel planning and active travel
* You will be a chartered transport planning professional or chartered engineer certified by the Engineering Council
* You will have strong practical knowledge of Linsig, Junctions 9 and preferably experience of using TRACC/similar
* You will have a strong understanding of relevant local and national policy and guidance

* Organised and methodical with particular attention to detail
* The ability to prioritise tasks and work to tight deadlines under pressure
* Have a pragmatic approach and possess strong problem solving techniques
* Be commercially aware
* Strong interpersonal skills, able to build relationships at all levels with clients and employees alike and across all professional disciplines
* Able to manage client expectations
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with an ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy
