An exciting opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified Ophthalmologist to join our growing team in Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.
This post is for a fixed term of 12 months and will be based between our facilities in Ormskirk and Southport.
As part of our trust's commitment to improving eye care in the area, the successful candidate will have sessions in our new £2.5 million dedicated Eye Clinic within the grounds of Ormskirk Hospital when it opens in the summer of 2025.
The post holder will be expected to lead on improving our emergency eye care service and contribute to our outpatient and surgical activity plan.
Main duties of the job
The post is for a Full-time Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist with a special interest in Eye Urgent Care and Cataract Surgery.
The successful candidate will be joining a progressive department and will be supportive of proposals to extend the scope of facilities currently available.
Workload and clinic template are in line with Royal College guidance.
Consideration will be given for time off in lieu due to bank holidays. As our weekend on-calls end at 9 PM, time off in lieu is not usually required.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* MB ChB or evidence of equivalent qualification
* Full and specialist registration with the General Medical Council (GMC), and licensed to practice
* FRCOphth or equivalent
* Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in all aspects of general Ophthalmology
* Competence in the management of eye trauma
* Able to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision
* Entered on the Specialist Register (or eligible for registration within six months of interview)
* CCT in Ophthalmology or CESR
Knowledge
* Knowledge and experience of Ophthalmology
* Broad range of IT skills
* Knowledge of evidence-based practice
* Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies
* Knowledge of the principles of clinical audit and evidence of participation
* Participation in continuing professional development (CPD) scheme and, where relevant, evidence of participation
* Interest in teaching medical, nursing, and other groups of staff
* Able to perform cataract surgery independently including complex cases
* Experience of supervising trainee doctors, clinically and surgically including cataract surgery
* Experience of teaching clinical skills to undergraduate medical students
* Experience of clinical or lab-based research with publications in peer-reviewed journals
* Extensive experience in the management of urgent eye care
* Publication of audit results
* Ability to supervise research
Skills
* Ability to communicate effectively with clinical colleagues, colleagues in Ophthalmology, other specialties and support staff
* Good knowledge of, and ability to use, spoken and written English
* Ability to present effectively to an audience, using a variety of methods and to respond to questions

Salary: £99,532 to £131,964 a year per annum (Grade YM 73)
