University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.
Main duties of the job
University Hospital Southampton is looking to appoint a clinical research fellow in hepatology for a fixed term period of 12 months from September 2025.
This is an exciting opportunity for a gastroenterology registrar (ST5+) to work in a tertiary referral hepatology unit to further develop clinical skills in hepatology and take part in research projects within the unit.
You will be based at Southampton General Hospital and will join a team of 7 consultants, 3-4 clinical registrars and 3-4 research registrars along with 3-4 ward-based resident doctors.
The unit manages patients with all aspects of liver disease and is a regional centre for complex hepatobiliary surgical and radiological work, including offering the full range of treatment options for hepatocellular carcinoma.
The unit has an active hepatology research programme including contributing to clinical research trials and delivering individual projects. In addition, the consultant team has a range of interests in medical education, clinical transformation, and management. You will have the opportunity for career development within these areas.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
This post provides approximately 50% time for clinical trial-based research along with 50% time to undertake clinical duties and projects within the department of hepatology at Southampton General Hospital.
Clinical duties:
You will be required to undertake clinical work as a registrar within the hepatology department. This will include a core requirement of two general hepatology outpatient clinics a week. Other clinical duties may be required including undertaking endoscopy lists, teaching, and assisting with departmental administration.
The post does not have an on-call commitment.
Research:
You will provide clinical support to the growing portfolio of hepatology clinical trials running in University Hospital Southampton and will require GCP training. The successful applicant will work alongside a team of dedicated hepatology research nurses. They will be involved in all aspects of clinical trials including setup and site initiation visits, patient identification, consent, recruitment, as well as monitoring safety and data collection during the clinical trial and follow-up.
Time and support will be available for the post holder to develop a project of their own, in a field of their choice that complements the research, education, or management opportunities available within the department.
Additional Information:
Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists).
Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave.
