Job Summary
We are looking for an experienced phlebotomist to join our friendly team here at Outpatients, to work both at our main site and community sites. Successful post holders must be keen to expand their phlebotomy skills and will be expected to complete a competency-based framework for Paediatric Phlebotomy. Experience of working with children or in an Outpatient setting is essential for this post.
We work as a large multi-disciplinary team to deliver outstanding care to our patients in Outpatients and our community settings. Experience of working collaboratively in a team within a healthcare environment is essential. For many of our patients, Outpatients is the first impression of our hospital and therefore excellent communication skills are required for this position to ensure patients and their families/carers are welcomed and reassured.
Main Duties of the Job
The Phlebotomist is an integral member of the clinical team. They will assist and support nursing, medical, and other professional staff in the delivery of high standards of holistic family-centered care to children and families.
Clinical tasks undertaken by the post holder will be ratified by the business unit. The Phlebotomist and ward manager are jointly responsible for ensuring competency. Clinical tasks undertaken will therefore be specific to the specialty, clinical area or patient group.
Job Responsibilities
* The post holder will provide the highest standards of nursing care to children and their families.
* Undertake phlebotomy procedures in the department, once fully trained and competent.
* The post holder will be an effective communicator in all aspects of their duties both in direct and indirect patient care.
* The post holder will work in collaboration with the healthcare team.
* The post holder will work within the confines of their mandatory and statutory obligations to the prevention and control of infection in the clinical area.
* The post holder will undertake delegated nursing tasks as deemed necessary to enhance the care of the patient, some of which may be competency-based.
* The post holder will assess and report risk to the nurse/lead clinician. The post holder will assist in the orientation and education of new staff.
* Take responsibility for, prioritise and manage own workload to support the clinical team.
* Work without direct supervision using experience and knowledge to ensure the highest quality care is delivered.
* Promote and maintain a safe and comfortable therapeutic environment for patients and their families.
* Assist in the basic care required by patients in clinical settings.
* Assist with the education of new staff and students and ensure they are instructed in the procedures and routines.
* Create and maintain relationships with patients, parents/carers, offering advice and support where necessary. Accompany patients to other areas of the hospital for specialised treatment.
* Prepare patients for and assist with specific clinical and non-clinical procedures appropriate to the clinical area.
Person Specification
1. Education and Training Essential
o Care Certificate/NVQ level 3 / equivalent in a healthcare-related topic or equivalent breadth of experience.
o English and Maths GCSE or equivalent, grade A-C.
