Job Summary This is an internship position in MCNC’s cybersecurity operations team. It requires exposure to networking, system administration, or cybersecurity concepts and self-reliance to research new concepts as you encounter them. Direct experience with cybersecurity solutions is a plus but is not required. As an intern, you will support the cybersecurity team by assisting in day-to-day tasks such as identifying threats and vulnerabilities, responding to them, and working to mitigate or remediate them. If you are looking to break into cybersecurity, this is an excellent opportunity to do so Key Roles and Responsibilities Grow to understand how a modern cybersecurity team utilizes multiple tools to provide a layered approach to the environments and assets it protects. Provide assistance in extracting value from the logs and activity generated by the tools the team supports. Review team documentation for completeness, applicability, and accuracy by following the steps outlined in the lab. Complete an internship project as agreed upon with the Manager of Cybersecurity Operations. Examples could be automated alerting from within our log management solution, refinement of team documentation, filtering and dashboarding of tickets within our ticketing system, automation of daily tasks, or something else that is clearly defined and which success can be measured. Flexible Roles and Responsibilities Ability to rack and stack network gear as needed, working in a data center environment. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds unaided. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds aided. Qualifications and Education Requirements Exposure to the following cybersecurity areas: Cyber Hygiene Patch Management Endpoint Protection Vulnerability Assessment / Vulnerability Management Security Monitoring / Intelligence gathering and analysis Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to communicate effectively with coworkers, management team, MCNC customers, and vendors. Must be able to deliver written material and presentations to technical and non-technical audiences. Able to work in a responsible and proactive fashion collaboratively or with minimal direct supervision. Comfortable collaborating across department boundaries to establish positive working relationships and drive operational security improvements without direct control of or supervision of assets. A willingness to adapt to new solutions as the growing catalog of Vital Cyber offerings evolves and changes over time. This role operates on a hybrid work model, allowing flexibility to work from home, but will also be required to work from our RTP office and other locations across the state as needed. Must have a valid driver's license and will be required to drive a company vehicle on company business. Pre-employment and annual MVR checks will be required during your employment with the company for this position in order to be approved to drive a company-owned vehicle. Background and sex offender checks will be performed for pre-employment and annually during your employment with the company. This role will be required to adhere to the MCNC Substance Abuse policy, which may include drug/alcohol screening at hire and periodically or randomly during employment. Preferred Qualifications/Specialties Degree in Cybersecurity, Information Technology, Computer Science, or another related field.
