Job Summary
Applications are invited from HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists to work in the Department of Cellular Pathology, of the Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust. Candidates must:
* Hold an accredited IBMS degree.
* Have completed the IBMS Registration Portfolio and have HCPC registration.
* Have relevant experience working in an NHS cellular pathology Laboratory.
The Cellular Pathology Department at Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Trust has a workload of 35,000 requests per annum, 3000 non-Gynae and 1000 Andrology samples. The department carries out a full range of diagnostic testing including immunocytochemistry.
We are looking for enthusiastic, self-motivated individuals with good communication skills who have the ability to work as a team member. You will be required to maintain a high degree of professional standards and adherence to patient confidentiality is paramount.
Main Duties of the Job
1. To carry out the scientific and technical work of the Cellular Pathology Department following defined protocols.
2. To carry out a broad range of scientific and technical work within the department as required by senior biomedical staff and working within Health Professions Council standards of proficiency for Biomedical Scientists.
3. To take part in any training required to maintain an up-to-date knowledge of all equipment and techniques used in areas in which they work.
4. To help ensure that all work is carried out to the standards necessary for UKAS/ISO Accreditation.
5. Required to operate sophisticated, automated laboratory equipment and perform manual and automated techniques.
6. Carry out routine maintenance and operation of equipment for the department.
7. To communicate effectively with colleagues and other healthcare staff.
8. To write departmental and implement Trust wide/departmental policies, procedures and guidelines.
9. To provide a high-quality and timely service.
10. To avoid waste and work in a cost-effective way at all times.
11. To identify problems within the areas that they are working and report them to their manager.

* A reasonable knowledge of health and safety principles applicable in working within a Pathology Department.
* Must understand the nature of patient confidentiality.
* Awareness of own limitations.

* A wide knowledge of Health and Safety law and its application to Pathology.
Skills and Abilities

* Can demonstrate ability to work unsupervised if required.
* Able to demonstrate good laboratory practice in their work.
* Able to communicate clearly and precisely both verbally and in writing with patients and all levels of staff inside and outside Pathology.

Experience
Essential
* Must have proven post-registration experience of working in a hospital Cellular Pathology Department including:
* Embedding and microtomy.
* Special Stains.
* Immunohistochemistry.
* For the Trainee position, the candidate must have experience of working in a hospital Cellular Pathology Department. The above tasks will be developed in house.
Desirable
* Experience of preparation and interpretation of Andrology specimens.
* Experience of simple transfer of specimens.

Qualifications

* An Accredited Institute of Biomedical Science degree and HCPC registration.
* For the Trainee position the HCPC registration/IBMS registration portfolio can be studied in house and must be completed within 1 year.

* Suitable Qualifications in Information Technology (e.g. CLAIT/ECDL).
* Suitable Qualifications in Health and Safety.
