Description Oxford Nanopore Technologies is headquartered at the Oxford Science Park outside Oxford, UK, with satellite offices and commercial presence in many global locations across the US, APAC and Europe. Oxford Nanopore employs from multiple subject areas including nanopore science, molecular biology and applications, informatics, engineering, electronics, manufacturing and commercial. The leadership team have a track record of delivering disruptive technologies to the market. Oxford Nanopore’s sequencing platform is the only technology that offers real-time analysis (for rapid insights), in fully scalable formats from pocket to population scale, that can analyse native DNA or RNA and sequence any length of fragment to achieve short to ultra-long read lengths. Our goal is to enable the analysis of any living thing, by anyone, anywhere. We offer real-time nanopore-based DNA/RNA sequencing technology: accessible, easy to use and fully scalable for any requirement. The team includes over 30 engineers, with core strengths in mechanical, fluidic, electronic, firmware, and production engineering. this group is responsible for the design of instruments, consumables and functional packaging as well as novel manufacturing systems from concept through to automated production and a true 360 degree role. We place a strong emphasis on maximising new product function within radically small form factors. We engineer each product from first principles and as a result nearly all parts are custom designed. On site there is extensive provision for rapid functional prototyping and testing. Our mechanical workshop includes mill, lathe, high resolution multi-material 3D printer, pick & place and dispenser robots, a polymer laser welder and CO2 laser cutter. Our development lab includes the latest instrumentation for imaging, sensing, data logging, and running automation systems. Role & Responsibilities: We are seeking a Senior Engineer with a mechanical or development engineering focus to join our New Products R&D team. You will be a creative individual, with the ability and passion to break down meaningful problems and provide elegant, validated design solutions. This role encompasses the product design from first concept through to pilot production and will require a keen awareness of time pressures, including strategies for optimising and prioritising requirements to meet deadlines. Core Responsibilities: • Crafting innovative concepts to address the technical needs of new products. • Conducting design feasibility studies; detailing assumptions, calculations, analysis, results and conclusions in technical reports to guide product development. • Designing and developing new product concepts including system level evaluation through to detailed calculation, design, testing and analysis. • Supporting and trouble-shooting the introduction of new products into pilot production. Skills / Experience Required: • Engineering or Physics degree (or equivalent) • Experience in precision, high tech or medical device engineering roles, with responsibility for new product technical development • Mechanics, including statics and dynamics. • Prototyping and rapid manufacturing technologies. • Test and development principles, including accuracy, precision, reliability and validity. • 3D CAD design through to manufacture of prototypes. • Knowledge of fluid dynamics and / or injection moulding/polymer technologies is helpful.
