Trainee Biomedical Scientist
Band 5 (Annex 21)
Job overview
We are looking for enthusiastic candidates for Trainee Biomedical Scientist roles within the Core Haematology and Core Biochemistry sections of Blood Sciences. Successful candidates will complete the Institute of Biomedical Sciences Certificate of Competence registration portfolio and will be eligible for HCPC registration at that point. Once trained, they will be an integral part of the 24/7 service, providing urgent diagnostic support to the Trust.
Blood Sciences plays a pivotal role in the provision of 11 million diagnostic tests per year which are essential for the delivery of high quality clinical care within all Directorates of the Trust and in Primary Care. The Department also acts as a regional and national reference laboratory.
The Blood Sciences Department is UKAS accredited and is housed at both Freeman Hospital and Royal Victoria Infirmary. Successful candidates will be expected to work at either site. The laboratory is progressive, well equipped and is accredited for training.
Main duties of the job
Key tasks will involve the processing, analysis and reporting of blood and other biological samples using state of the art laboratory equipment.
Applications for a Trainee Biomedical Scientist position will be considered from candidates with an Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) accredited Biomedical Sciences degree, or those who will complete an accredited degree or top ups this year.
Successful candidates will be expected to undertake a period of on the job training whilst completing an IBMS Certificate of Competence portfolio. Typically this will take 9-12 months to achieve and will enable application for HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist. During this period the trainee will be placed on Annex 21 at 75% of Band 5 for a 9-12 months.
The laboratory is progressive and well equipped and is accredited for training, with participation in CPD being actively encouraged. The Blood Sciences Department has a strong track record of staff development and career progression, including progression to Specialist Biomedical Scientist positions upon completion of the IBMS Specialist Diploma or IBMS Diploma of Specialist Practice. The successful applicant will be fully supported throughout their training and beyond to grow professionally and pursue a rewarding career at Newcastle Hospitals.
