The professional body for the Scottish bar, the Faculty of Advocates is a membership organisation with the Advocates Library at its heart. Established formally in 1689, the Library blends tradition with its modern role as a busy working law library, providing a library and information service to members of the Faculty and acting as Scotland’s national law library. The Faculty also has responsibility for maintaining a formal relationship with the Abbotsford Trust - located at Sir Walter Scott’s former home. The following vacancy has arisen:
Post: Research & Reference Services (RRS) Assistant (Court Papers)

Salary: Grade 4a: £28,040- £34,083 per annum
All new appointments will be made at the start of the salary scale
Hours: 35 hours per week, Monday - Friday: 9.00am – 5.00pm

This role reports to the Research & Reference Services Deputy Librarian/Archivist. The priorities of the RRS team are to provide a legal and general enquiry service to Advocates Library users, manage loans from and to the National Library of Scotland (NLS), to be responsible for library borrowing services and together with the Collection and Access Services (CAS) team, generally ensure the smooth running of the Library. Additionally, the RRS team is responsible for developing new services to support Members and provide training and user education in all aspects of library services. The postholder will assist the RRS Deputy Librarian in managing the Library’s collections of Court Papers, making these available to Members, and dealing with Court Papers related enquiries.
Key Responsibilities:
* Assisting with updating and maintaining the Court Papers Databases
* Accessioning new court papers
* Assisting with the collection of Session & Justiciary Papers and UK Supreme Court & Judicial Committee of the Privy Council Appeal Papers
* Answering research enquiries from Library users
* Developing an excellent working knowledge of legal information
* Supporting library users in their use of online resources while providing basic IT support including the use of photocopiers and printers
* Retrieving and supplying information required by NLS readers and staff
* Processing requests for items required by Members from the NLS
The successful candidate must have a degree or HNC in Library & Information Studies (or equivalent) with at least 1 years’ experience of working in a library. Knowledge of handling customer service enquiries and of library shelving and stock management principles is desirable. The successful candidate will have good interpersonal skills, be a good team player with the ability to demonstrate a collaborative approach to work with colleagues, the ability to prioritise and manage conflicting demands and demonstrate a customer focused approach to their work.
